________________ INTRODUCTION XLIX Some of these decuple terms are, of course, those which we find in Ganitasārasaigraha (pp. 7-81), too. It may be mentioned en passant that Simhatilaka Sūri, while explaining the 18 notational places furnishes us with synonyms for 12 of them as under: (1) das'asahasra for ayuta, (2) das'alakṣa for prayuta, (3) das'akoți for arbuda (4) koți s'ata for padma, (5) kotisahasra for kharva, (6) das'akoțisahasra for nikharva, (7) koțilakṣa for mahāsaroja, (8) das'akoțila kșa for s'anku, (9) koţikoți for samudra, (10) das'akotīkotā for antya, (11) koțīkotīs'ata for madhya and (12) kotikotisahasra for parārdha. A Buddhist work styled as Abhidhānappadīpikā (I, pp. 69-70) and published by Gujarat Puratattva Mandira in Samvat 1980, furnishes us with some useful information in this connection. The pertinent verses are as under:"संख्याप्रकार (अट्ठारसन्ता संखेय्ये संख्या एकादयो तिसु ॥ । -ताण्ड्यब्राह्मण १७-१४-२ (p. 395) 1 Herein the terms sahasraka, das'asāhasra, das'claksa, das'akoti, arbuda, nyarbuda, kharva, mahākharva, padma, mahăpadma, ksoni, mahaksoni, s'ankha, mahās'ankha, ksiti, mahākṣiti, ksobha and mahükşobha are used to donote the 4th, 5th, 7th and 9th to 24th sthānas respectively. 2 It seems that Simhatilaka uses both the words koți and koți as well; or it may be that the scribe has not been quite consistent in transcribing the Ms. Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
