VĀK (SPEECH OR ORGANS OF SPEECH
OR VOICE) Acording to Jaina Philosophy, Vāk (Speech or Voice) is nonsoul, corporeal, non-sentient and non-living material substance of the beings.3 The two-sensed beings and five-sensed beings receive matter by the sense of taste in the form of language, while the sam jõin jivas (those which possess consciousness to make a distinction between good and evil) receive infinite manovarganāyogyapudgalaskandhas (matters fit to turn into manovarganā=mind-dust-or particle) by manaḥpariņāma (mental transformation).4 In the medicial science also speech is regarded as material. (It comes out of the larynx or the organ of voice which is trangular box of cartilage and muscles, situated below the pharynx and the root of the tongue. It presents a considerable projection at the upper and front parts of the neck externally. At the upper part of the larynx there is a lid of cartilage called the epiglottis.5 The voice is generated by forcing air from the lungs through the space between two stretched vocal chords which are stretched across the trachea with a narrow vocal slit between them, the edges of the slit acting as 1.
