Classification of Matter
249
It appears from the above analysis of vargaņās of Pudgala that whatever is visible is not the final units of Matter. Five hundred and thirty classes of Matter
In Jaina Metaphysics Matter has been classified into five hundred thirty groups from the point of view of the prominence of its qualities-colour, taste, smell, touch and shape on the basis of their respective predominance in their substratum. It has been divided into one hundred groups by accepting colour as primary and other qualities as secondary 5 (5 +2+8+5)= 100, one hundred groups by accepting taste as primary and others as secondary, forty-six groups by regarding smell as primary and others as secondary, one hundred eighty four groups by accepting touch as primary and others as secondary and one hundred groups by accepting shape as primary and others as secondary. Thus the total number of these classes of Matter is five hundred and thirty.
It is stated in the Prajñā panā Sūtra that those which are kālavarņipariņitapudgalas (black-coloured-tronsformed matters) with regard to colour are surabhigandha-pariņata and durabhigandhapariņata (pleasant and unpleasant-smell-transformed) with regard to smell; tiktarasapariņata (bitter taste-transformed), katukarasapariņata (sour-taste transformed), kaşāyarasapariņata (astringent taste-transformed), amlarasapariņata
