I have read your book with great interest, because the question you have therein dealt with is important, not only for Indians but for the whole of mankind."
રેવન્ડ કે લખેલ ગાધીજીના જીવનચરિત્ર સંબંધે લખ્યું:
"I happen to know you through that Biography which gripped me and it gave me a chance to know and understand you better." .
ટેસ્ટોયે તા. ૭-૯-૧૯૧૦ ના રોજ એક લાંબે પત્ર ગાંધીજીને લખ્યો છે. તેમાં ગાંધીજીના “Indian Opinion’નાં લખાણોની તારીફ કરી છે. અન્યાયના પ્રતિકારમાં હિંસાના ઉપયોગનું સમર્થન કરવાવાળા કેવી રીતે ઈશુ ખ્રિસ્તના ઉપદેશને વિકૃત કરે છે તે તેમાં બતાવ્યું છે. ટ્રાન્સવાલની ગાંધીજીની લડત વિશે લખ્યું છેઃ
“Your work in Transval which seems to be far away from the centre of our world, is yet the most fundamental and the most important to us supplying the most weighty practical proof in which the world can now share and with which must participate, not, only the Christians, but all the people of the world.” , ટાટાયને ગાંધીજી ઉપર આ છેલે પત્ર છે. ૭ નવેમ્બર, ૧૯૧૦ના રોજ તેમનું અવસાન થયું.
હવે ઉપર જણાવેલ “A Letter to a Hindu” વિશે. બંગભંગ પછી હિન્દમાં Terrorist Party ખાસ કરી બંગાળમાં ખૂબ જોરમાં હતી, જેમાં શ્રી અરવિંદ ઘોષ, સી. આર. દાસ વગેરે હતા. સી. આર. દાસ “Free Hindustan’ નામે છૂપી પત્રિકા કાઢતા હતા. ટેસ્ટોયનાં લખાણો તેમણે વાયાં હશે અને હિંસક પ્રતિકાર ન કરે તે સિદ્ધાંત તેમને માન્ય ન હતા. તેથી તેમણે ટાયને પત્ર લખેલો જેના જવાબમાં ટેસ્ટ “A Letter to a Hindu” લો, જેમાં હિન્દુ ધર્મે હિંસાને અનુમતિ આપી નથી તે બતાવ્યું. સ્વાભાવિક રીતે ગાંધીજીને આ પત્ર ગમે. તેમણે ટેસ્ટયની
