તત્ત્વવિચાર અને અભિનંદન
- આવું જીવન તેઓ પોતે ૯૦ વરસ જીવ્યા. એ જણાવવાની જરૂર ન હોય કે તેઓ જીવનના ઉત્તરાર્ધમાં નિરામિષાહારી રહ્યા હતા. તેમણે માનવસેવા તે કરી, પણ જીવ પ્રત્યે આદર અને કરુણા તેમનામાં ભર્યા છે તે બતાવતાં તેમની આસપાસ અનેક પ્રાણીઓ અને પક્ષીઓનું મેટું વૃંદ હંમેશાં રહેતું. જમવા બેસે તો કીડી-વંદાને માટે ખાવાનું નાખે. મકાન પાયો નાખતા હોય તે માટીમાં છવાત નથી તે જુએ, પડું બાંધવા એક ડાળીને ખપ હોય તે બે ન તોડે. તેઓ લખે છે :
“Devoted as I was from boyhood 10 the cause of the protection of animal life, it is a special joy. to me that universal ethic of Reverence for Life shows the sympathy for animals, which is so often represented as sentimentality, to be a duty which no thinking man can escape."
[અનુવાદ : “પશુજીવનને રક્ષણ આપવાના ધર્મકાર્ય તરફ નાનપણથી જ મારું મન વળેલું હોઈને મારા માટે એ સવિશેષ આનંદને વિષય બને છે કે “રેવરન્સ ફોર લાઈફ” – “જીવ માત્ર વિશે સમાદર બુદ્ધિના - સર્વવ્યાપી નિતિક વિચારમાંથી પશુઓ પ્રત્યેની સહાનુભૂતિ જેને ઘણી વાર કેવળ લાગણી તરીકે વર્ણવીને ઉતારી પાડવામાં આવે છે તે સહજપણે એક એવા ધર્મ તરીકે ફલિત થાય છે કે જેનો કોઈ વિચારશીલ માનવી ઇન્કાર કરી ન જ શકે.” !
અંતમાં સ્વાઈટઝરને જીવનમંત્ર તેમના જ શબ્દોમાં કહ્યું :
“ The ethic of Reverence for Life is found particularly strange, because it establishes no dividing line between more valuable and less valuable life. To undertake to lay down universally valid distinctions of value between different kinds of life will end in judging them by greater and lesser distance at which they seem to stand from us human beings - as we ourselves judge. But that is a purely subjective criterion. Who among us knows what significance any other kind of life has in itself, and as a part of the universe ?
