________________ 1 9 9 9 GIFTS OF SERVICE TO THE WORLD District Six Heritage The Center for Ubuntu in the Republic of South Africa upholds that every person in the nation has a story to tell. To that end, the Center is working to present the story of the past for historical purposes, and to use this knowledge to create a positive future which is informed by past mistakes and struggles. The Center will draw out the poison from South Africa's memories of Apartheid, while celebrating the good things - like the indomitable spirit. In this, the Center hopes to contribute to the healing of South Africa's memory using District Six as a dramatic example. Just as every South African has a story to tell, so do the country's faith communities, particularly their role in the nation's struggle against apartheid. Center for Ubuntu REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA Hearts, Hands, and Voices: an Interfaith Festival Celebrating the Sacred The Hearts, Hands and Voices Festival celebrates religious and spiritual diversity. The event takes place in a beautiful mountain park setting and includes a wide variety of inspirational live music, sacred dance and poetry. It also includes faith community and non-profit educational exhibits, interfaith dialogue, meditation and prayer tents, teens and children's activities, hands on art projects, and more. Common Spirit USA Peace Necklaces We Are One and the Seed Foundation has given the Parliament of the World's Religions 1.000 Peace Necklaces to distribute to youth and religious leaders. The We Are One Necklace for Peace initiative honors the movement for peace around the world, and has ten of the many diverse faith traditions of the world represented on the necklace. In the center is the Heart of Peace, which symbolizes the bringing together of all of the religions and people of the world. This necklace design was blessed by the Dalai Lama. We Are One USA Sharing Spiritual Tradition from Japan The Shumei Taiko Ensemble, one of the leading Taiko drumming troops in the world, inspires audiences with the beauty and precise articulation of the world's oldest musical traditions. Founded in 1982 as part of Shinji Shumeikai (a spiritual organization whose mission includes fostering an appreciation of the arts), the Ensemble has come to occupy an eminent place in the world of Japanese performing arts. Acclaimed in its mastery of traditional Taiko techniques, the group has infused vibrant, thoroughly modern approaches into an art steeped in tradition. In this way, the ensemble brings Japanese spiritual arts to a broader audience. The Shumei Taiko Ensemble has performed in a variety of venues, including numerous schools, in order to foster inter cultural appreciation and to build bridges between peoples. The ensemble will perform during the Parliament in several townships and other communities in the Cape Town area. Shinji Shumeikai/Shumei Taiko Ensemble JAPAN African Art and Cultural Festival The African Art and Cultural Festival is organized in nine African countries for churches, other religious groups, Africans and others wanting language and cultural exchanges. The Festival focuses on providing information about HIV, Human Rights, the Democratic campaign, crime, and xenophobia, through art and culture. Mr. F.
