________________ 1999 GIFTS OF SERVICE TO THE WORLD Hope for Children The project goal is to improve the living conditions of underprivileged children all over the world by means of education. Hope for Children calls on every Dutch citizen to donate at least one thousandth part of his or her yearly income. By doing so, in the year of 1999, the community can transform the symbolic turning point of entering the new millennium into a real turning point. Worldwide, there are 125 million children who do not benefit from any kind of education whatsoever. Teaching these children to read and write will provide them with a key to the world. The implementation of this initiative will be in the hands of the largest and most renowned relief organization and supervised by Hope for Children fund. While the project originates in Netherlands, the organizers hope that it will become an international effort. Hope for Children Fund NETHERLANDS Islamic Medical Association Clinics 1.500 Muslim health-care professionals in over 25 branches of primary health care clinics throughout South Africa service the underprivileged in rural areas. These medical professionais also assist the public through publishing, hosting public symposia, and addressing ethical issues. IMAC also provides health education and research, local and international relief work, an AIDS program, vaccinations for pilgrims, radio talks, Halaal food and prayer facilities in hospitals, and facilitates Muslim post mortems. Islamic Medical Association of South Africa REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA Sufi Women Organization The Sufi Women Organization (SWO) - a humanitarian, non-political, non-sectarian organization - has undertaken a variety of gifts of service. In its ongoing effort to help women and children in Indonesia, the SWO allocates donations from various SWO Chap ters and delivers much-needed supplies to Jakarta, Padenglang. Tanjung Priok, Aceh, and neighboring areas. The goal is to collect enough money to provide food, supplies, and clothing to student activity groups and the elderly. Reports of the project will be published online and in the Swo newsletters. In addition to their work in Indonesia, the SWO also hosts and organizes an annual Interfaith Women's Conference. All SWO efforts are celebrated and solidified through SWO luncheons every six weeks, where outstanding women speakers share their spiritual journey with a large audience. International Association of Sufism USA Habitat for Humanity International Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit Christian organization that attempts to solve the problem of inadequate shelter by forming partner ships between people in need and those with the willingness and resources to help. It is not a give away program - Habitat homeowners invest hundreds of hours of "sweat equity" in the planning and construction of their homes and then accept full responsibility for the cost through a no-interest mort gage. The payments go into a local "Fund for Humanity" which generates more houses for future homeowners. Because there is no profit or interest involved, owning a simple, decent home can become a reality for many families previously trapped in poverty housing. In Northern Ireland the Habitat's affiliate pairs Protestants and Christians in Belfast to break down the barriers and rebuild communities. The 11 houses built in Catholic West Belfast and 12 in loyalist Glencairn are the product of both groups working side by side to end to both religious apartheid and housing woes. Habitat is at work in over 60 countries around the globe and has built houses sheltering over 400,000 people.
