________________ 1999 GIFTS O F SERVICE TO THE SABATO SAUSUNNETIDO P Jimmy Carter's Work Project Former President Jimmy Carter, Habitat's most distinguished volunteer, builds annually with Habitat for Humanity International. In 2000, the Jimmy Carter Work Project in New York City will complete the 100,000th home built worldwide. President Carter will also drive the last nail in the house which will end poverty housing in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, USA. Habitat for Humanity International USA Senior Citizen's Service Mission: Old Age Home To strengthen the confidence of senior citizens, the National Public Charitable Trust plans to establish an Old Age Home, which is rare in India, and may be the first of its kind in the area. In addition to shelter, proper care and attention, the seniors will be provided with an atmosphere free from tensions, stresses, disrespect and heavy responsibilities. The House will be a cosmopolitan home open to all, irrespective of caste, creed, religion and sex. These and other facilities are being constructed under the banner of the National Public Charitable Trust. National Public Charitable Trust INDIA The Linji Buddhist Seminary The Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order's Lin Ji Farm is being converted into an orphanage and primary school for up to 600 residents. The primary focus of the orphanage will be to provide housing and care for the 2 million children who will be without parents as a result of the AIDS epidemic in Southern Africa by the year 2010. The program will also invite elders who have lost their children to AIDS to teach at the school in an effort to preserve native languages and traditions. Fo Guang Shan, Nan Hua Temple REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA n 74 Jain Education International 2010_03 WORLD Daarnaktannons ses InterReligious Council of Central New York Founded in 1976, the Interreligious Council of Central New York (IRC) is a community in which the local religious bodies relate to each other and the wider community as people of God working together for the common good. IRC offers programs focused in its three strategic areas: relationships, advocacy, and service. Each year, IRC and its programs collaborate with over 250 organizations to address needs in Central New York. Projects include the following: <%-SETTIONING LABERLIN The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program works to improve the quality of life for those living in long term care facilities and adult homes. Trained volunteers advocate on behalf of residents and their families, helping them preserve the dignity and rights of the frail elderly and people with disabilities. The Senior Companion Program empowers over 100 low income senior citizens to serve as companions for those elders who are unable to care for themselves. The Refugee Resettlement Program settles over 750 participants from all over the world each year through congregational sponsorships. The Southeast Asian Center serves over 3,000 Southeast Asians with community-building activities, English as a Second Language and Citizenship classes, and cultural events. The Covenant Housing Program creates safe, accessible, and affordable housing for the homeless, the low income community, and those who are medically and physically challenged. People are empowered to live independently in the community and often can buy their own homes. The Pastoral Care Program not only trains chaplains from many faith communities, but 20 contracted chaplains serve hospitais, elder homes and jails in our area.
