________________ 1999 GIFTS O F SERVICE то THE morfoustic A Low-Cost Institute of English for Adults The Inter-Cultural Research Center aims to promote English as a second language for Sri Lankans order to enable them to communicate with people of different communities both within and outside the country. To effectively achieve this goal, it strives to develop tools and techniques that could give adult Sri Lankans a proficiency in the use of the language in as short a time-span as possible, and (taking into account the low-income situation of the majority) at as low a cost as possible. In response to Sri Lanka's present economic uncertainty, ethnic conflict, and regression in educational standards, Dr. Fernando (the head of the Department of Western Classical Culture, Kelaniya University for nearly twenty years) created this Center in 1984 as an Institute of English for adults. Classes were conducted at first for a student body of about 25 in a car-garage renovated for the purpose. Now a two-story building provides room for a daily attendance of around 600, with participants who range from twenty to sixty years old. The Campaign aims to encourage people of all faiths to take some individual action or decision which will put right a past wrong. It encourages each one of us to make some tangible contribution to our collective future by admitting to, or apologizing for, some mistake that we have done - whether big or small. By helping clean our own slate, each of us can together make the world a better place. It is all too easy to weighed down by the baggage we carry from the past - a backlog of matters undealt with in the home or at work. Deeper things. such as hurts, resentments, fears, guilt, and prejudices can be excess baggage as well. Not everything can be put behind us, nor should everything be forgotten, but much could be forgiven and also much could be left behind in the Old Millennium instead of being carried into the next. The Clean Slate Campaign is inviting everyone to sign the 'Clean Slate Promise' which says: "I promise to take at least one practical step towards wiping my slate clean." The Clean Slate Campaign UNITED KINGDOM Palidoran Interfaith Women's Journey The Henry Martyn Institute, together with the Interfaith Office of the United Church of Canada, paired four indian women of Muslim, Hindu, Christian and Tribal traditions with four Canadian women of parallel traditions. With the above sponsorship, these eight women have explored a women's agenda for interfaith work while travelling through India and Canada. This experience has created a greater awareness of women's relationships to and understanding of modern interfaith initiatives.
