THE LATE " DANVIR" SHETH MANECKCHAND HIRACHAND On this side of India Sheth Maneckchaud was known as it erat philantlispist. Born in Surat in Vikrain Samvat yer 1908, he died only a short time ago at the agee of 62. His father Hirachand was poor and so was his grandfather Gumarji who migrated to Siras. from Brinar ( Udaypore ) in A. D. 1840 to trade in opium in a wmall way. Circumstances made the family to go to B mbiy, where Maneckchand with his "hree brotbers be an business in & humble way and learnt the profession of pearlborers and stringers. Fortune favored their honest efforts, and in a short time they began to purchase and sell land in Bombay at a great proflt. Ultimately they settled down as pearl merchants; exporting pearls to Europe and making huge profits. Although a man witb comparatively very little education, Maneckcband's outlook on life was very wide, and just as he was able to amass a huge fortune, so be spent generously buge sums in works of charidy.
