New works of the type Phagu, Barahamasa, Kakka or Matrka etc. which have been published during recent years present a few such instances. Two Rasakas also, which are being published herewith, are similar illustrations. We can draw attention to some recent examples: The Phagus published in some issues of the Anusamdhana periodical and the Barahakkharakakka and Dohanuvekkha recently published by the Parsva Educational and Research Foundation, Ahmedabad. Rasaka or Rasabandha The Rasaka or Rasabandha was second important genre in Apabhramsa literature besides the Sandhibandha. It was quite distinct in theme, form and structure from the latter and enjoyed the same vogue. It was a sort of lyrical composition of moderate length reminding us of the Sanskrit Khandakavya like e.g. the Meghaduta. It was predominantly a lyrical form. In one of its types it employed one traditionally fixed metre for the general body of the poem and a variety of choice metres for the purpose of variation. In the face of its popularity as can be gathered from definitions and extolling reference of the earliest Prakrit prosodists (Svayambhu proclaims it as a veritable elixir to the gatherings of the dilettanti), it is very strange that not a single name of any of these early Rasakas, let alone their actual specimens or excerpts, is handed down to us. And for the later times too, we have very little to relieve our ignorance about this important class of Apabhramsa poems. It seems that there were Page #10 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ vii even some Prakrit and Sankrit Rasas. But none has come to light so far. Its vigour can be judged from its later continuations. Having undergone continuous and basic trasformation the Rasaka persisted in some of the New Indo-Aryan literatures down to the end of the nineteenth century (and as Rasas, it is even currently a popular poetic form of composition). There are hundreds of Rasas in Early Gujarati and Rajasthani, most of the preserved ones being works of the Jaina authors. Bur for Apabhramsa all we have got is (1) a tenth century reference to one Ambadevaya rasa of Devadatta which was probably a Jain religious poem; (2) Atweith century reference to one Manikya-prastarikapratibaddha rasa; (3) A unique thirteenth century poem, Samdesa-rasaka, from the pen of a Muslim author; (4) One small didactic Jain Rasa of the twelfth century, devoid of any literary significance. The Samdesa-rasaka of Abdala Rahamana(SR.) is a charming Data-kavya or Saidesa kavya of 223 stanzas distributed over three Prakramas (sections). But this division rests entirely on the development of the theme. After the prefatory section, we are introduced in the second section to a Virabini s chance meeting with a traveller, through whom she sends a message to her husband who had failed to return from abroad on the promised date. In spite of the overworked theme of love-in-separation, the poet has succeeded in imparting to it some genuine freshness, and a very facile handling of diction and metres gets the lion's share of this credit. In using one metre for the general frame and more than twenty pupular metres for variation, the Samdesa-rasaka suppiles us a typical and the only preserved example of a genuinc Rasabandha. That it is from the pen of a Muslim poet frurther adds to its uniqueness. It gives us some idea of the sensitive delineation of sentiments (especially of love), intense lyricism and richness of metrical types that was characteristic of the Rasabandha. The Upadesarasayana-rasa of Sinadattasori (1076-1155 A.D.) is a sernion in eighty verses prasing the genuine spiritual guide (guru) and genuine religious practices and denouncing the spurious ones. It is not a real represantative of a Rasaka poem, but a late specimen of a popular literary type pressed in the service of religious preaching. It is straight way composed in one single metre without any structural arrangement of parts that usually characterize the Rasaka form. A number of cita Page #11 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ viii tions occurring in Bhoja's Srngaraprakasa strongly suggests that Bhoja was quoting from some Ap. Rasakas. A shorter variety of Rasaka, a lyrical song to accompany a circular group-dance is also described by the prsodists and this has continued with periodical changes in its form and function down to the present day in certain western and central regions of India. As stated at above there is not one but several aspects from which the SR. proves to be of considerable importance and interest. The literary form of the SR. is so novel as to bestow on it the distinction of being the first Ap. text of its kind published so far. As the title of the SR. indicates, it is a Rasaka type of poetic composition. By this one would be instantly reminded of the Rasa compositions the exuberance of which in the Old Western Rajasthani literature is so remarkable. But the form of the present Rasaka is, as the treatment below indicates, altogether different from that of the OWR. Rasas. There are two prosodists who at all take any notice of the form. The addition they make to our knowledge, though meagre, is quite welcome in view of the general paucity of information relating to the structural side of the Apabhnasa poetry. Of these two prossodists one is far. The portion IV 27 to IV 38 of his fa evidently, though not expressly, deals with a few Apabhrsa metres, strictly so called. This small section, after treating dohA, mAgadhikA, mAtrA, raDDA, aDillA and ends up by defining the 4 form at 37-38. We come to know from this that two different types of rAsaka were familiar to virahAGka. Vis. IV 37 says that rAsaka is constituted with vistAritakas or dvipadIs closed with vidArI. All these peculiar terms are defined by virahAGka at the beginning of the II of the Vjs. But our concern is with the second type of 4%, treated at lv 38. There we are told that that which is built up with many aDilAs or duvahaas, with many mAtrAs, raDDAs and DhosA is called by the name TH. A definition essentially similar but supplementary in details is advanced by svayaMbhU. In his svayaMbhUcchaMdas while closing the treatment of Apabhrmsa metres, he thinks his worthwhile to say something regarding the form and the last four stanzas (VII 49-52) of the Sc. are devoted . At VIIT 49 1 it is said that in poetry the TH composition with its ghattAs, chaDDaNiAs, paddhaDiyAs and other choice metres proves of great charm to the people'. But immediately following this is defined a 21 moraic metre called Th which probably suggests that this particular metre found special preference in the Tal compositions. Collection of the Oriental Research Institute, Baroda (No. 4719 ) from which a xerox-copy of the MS. was acquired. The description of the MS. is as follows. 6 leaves (1 - 6 a). 16 lines per folio. 48 to 52 letters per line. Clear, bold hand-writing. Copied by and large carefully. Authorship and Date The sAgaradatta zreSThi-rAsaka was written in about 1460 A.C. by zAntisUri, disciple of 31146 arif belonging to Samdera Gaccha. His Guruparampara is : 791146ffaf () - ufan () - Tiff() fur (8) mutta (?)-4fTER (2)--31796R. His disciple was $uft, the author of fait -Tn. His inscriptions dated V.S. 1503 and 1552 are known. He was living till V.S. 1597. He was also the author of 70 fireature (150 verses). Sources of information : (1) Begining of the SSR. (2) The information given by L.B. Gandhi (Qunted in no. 3. Form and Structure Form Santisuri has unusually followed the moded of Apabhramsa Rasabandha as represented by the Sandesarasaka. Besides employing two or three metres modes as principal, he hes ased numerous other metres for variation and in this matter he has depended upon the prend it. the other two features which SSR. shares with SR. are the descrip Page #17 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [4] tion of reasons and that of the caure. Remarkably, the reasons are described in terms of the changes in the day to-day living of the peopletheir food, dress, routine activities, festivals, customs etc. This gives us a realirtle picture of the common life of Santisuris times. Structure Description of the Metrcs and Rhyming Prosc Type and Their List in Order of Occurrence For the definitions of aDilla, kuMDaliyA, gAhA, ghAta (which is the same as vastu of LR.), cAli, dUhA, (choTaDA dUhA), paddhaDI (which is the same as rAsau of LR.) bhujaMgaprayAta, maDilla, SaTpada, siloga and rAsau (which is the same as 46 st of LR.) see LR. Introduction. Only HICO 2541 and lacchIhara are peculiar to SSR. What is called mAlatI-rUpaka here is the same as bhrAmarAvali (Prakrta Pairngala 2, 154; Vrttajati-samuccaya, 4, 61) each line of which is made up of five sagaNa (uu-, uu-, uu-, uu-, uu-). mAlatI is a different metre (Velankar, Chandonusasana, p. 361). lacchIhara is defined at Prakrta Paimgala 2, 127 as each of its four lines having four ragaNas (-1-, -1-, -u-, -1-). It is known as kAminImohana, sragviNI etc. in other manuals of metres. (Velankar, p. 215). SaTpada, aDillA, maDilla bhuMjagaprayAta, kuMDaliyA is Apabhramsa. That of the dUhA, afe is Old Gujarati. Bur there is generally some admixture in most of the cases. Because of the influence of the prAkRta paiMgala, some forms of the Old Braja also can be seen. Due to the long coverage given to the topic of Sadrtuvarnana (vv. 13-47) the SSR. clearly shows that its model was the earlier Rasaka works like the Samdesarasaka. It was a very favourite topic in the Medieval regional languages also (e.g. in the Kavya of Early Hindi, mAdhavAnalaH kAmakaMdalA - prabaMdha etc.). In the description of the seasons in SSR. consderable scope is given to the seasonal change in the general day-to-day life of the people and especially to the change in the fooditems suitable to cach season. The story element is just one constituent of SSR. In this matter also Santisuri's Rasaka significantly differs from that of Isvarasuri's LR. which gives equal importance to description and narration. Works on the story of Sagaradatta Accarding to JGK. there are three more Rasas in medieval Gujarati on the story of Sagaradatta. Sahajakirta belonging to the Khartara Gaccha wrote in V.S. 1675 (=1619 A.C.) Sagarasresthi-katha at Vikramapura (i.e. Bikaner) containing 13 Dhalas and 232 verses The theme is mentioned as Supatradana (vol. 2, pp.399-400; no. 1340). Hiranamda or Hiramuni belonging to the Loka-Gujarati Gaccha wrote Sagaradatta-rasa in V.S. 1724 (=1668 A.C.) at Jalora. It contans 25 Dhalas and 704 verses (Vol. 4, p. 343, no. 3343). Bhayani According to the Jain Gurjara Kavio (Second edition, p. 221), three Mss of LC are known :(1) From the Patan Bhamdar collection, (2) from the Samgha Bhamdar collection and (3) The Bhandarkar Research Institute collection. The present edition is based on the xerox-copy of the Ms. from the Saingha Bhamdar. According to my information the Patan Bhamdir Ms. is a copy of the Sangha Bhamdar Ms. Similarly the xerox copy of the Ms. from the Bhandarkar Research Institute Collection, which | acquired and examined is a duplicate of the Patan Bhamdar Ms. The Ms. is numbered 83/2024. It contains 28 leaves. 14 lines per folio. 38 to 44 letters per line. Clear, bold handwriting. Beginning : ft aefATRY TH: 11 End : gfast foaia I TH ATT HITHRI Shfuquara 11 It is followed by list of the metres used in the work. In the Ms. the leaves comtaining vv, 129-151 are missing. So it cannot be said where the second Adhikara ends and the third Adhikara begins Due to usual scribal practices, there are numerous orthographic errors in the Ms. such as s or s for $, tad for od or vice versa, omission or addition of Anusvara, omission or repetition of some letter or word. confusion between 3, 3, ?, ?, , etc. In several cases a line or iis part is missing. Such obvious citors have been corrected. Where there is somc doubt about the textual reading it has been indicated by a querry, The errors in the designation or the numbering ctc. in the case of metres also have been corrected. The meaning of a number of lines also is not clear. Authorship and Date lalitAMgacaritra or rAsakacUDAmaNi was written by Isvarasuri in 1505 A.C. Isvarasuri was also called Devasundara. Isvarasuri belonged to the Samdcra-gaccha. According to a stone inscuption dated V.S. 1597, isvarsuri, the author of LR. inaugurated the setting up again of the icon of the Tirtharikara Rsabhadeva in a temple at Nadalai. That icon was said to be established there originally by Yasobhadrasuri in V.S. 964 through his Mantra-sakti, but was possibly destroyed or became dilapidated during the course of time. His stonc inscription of V.S. 1557 and an inscription on metal image dated V.S. 1560 are also known. Isvarasuri has written numerous works in Sanskrit and Old Gujarati. They are : 1. wa-farer-4920-Frau, . afstanafa or 72 suufo (v.s. 1561), 3. sit4181915 or frost 14$ (v.s. 1564), 4. G4791-79 (1275),5. fifcurfa-gufetti (73 to 76 verses), 6. yazobhadrasUriprabaMdha or phAlgu-ciMtAmaNi, 7. medapATa- stavana (saTIka), 8. sumitra-caritra (V.S. 1581), 9. TA -TIA (6 verses). Of these Nos. 2, 3, 5, 9 are obviously in Old Gujarati. Nos. 1, 4, 6, 7, 7 were possibly in Sanskrit. lalitAMgacaritra was written is dazapura (in mAlavadeza) at the request of Pumjaraja, who was the chief minister (1470-414705) of king Nasira, son of Gyasuddina, ruling at #546 in A ach. Pumjaraja belonged to the zrImAlavaMza. He was son of sonI and rAyajIvana. His wife was saMsAradevI. His brothers were muMjarAja and madana who were also ministers. puMjarAja himself had some literary works to his credit besides being a man of literary taste and patron of literature. Sources of information : (1) Concluding Puspika at the end of the first, third and fourth Adhikara of LC. (2) The information first given by C.D. Dalal (quoted in no. 3). (3) Jain Gurjara Kavio (revised edition) 1, pp. 219-221. (4) Gujarati Sahityakos, p. 26. Thus as regards the theme LC. is different from the Samdesarasaka which has an event as its theme and which is devoted to poctic treatment of that event and comequently qualifies like Taco as a gust. LC. on the other hand is as observed before a caritakAvya. One more point to be noted is the feature of dividing the poem into sections based on the divisions of the theme Samdesarasaka is di vided into three Prakramas, while le is divided into four Adhikaras. Page #40 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [27] Influences from the previous Tradition The fact is that as can be seen from the Introduction to santisuri's HTTG-T740, the latter is isvarasuri's model for his LC. He surpasses his Guru's poem in metrical richness, descriptions etc. Besides, isvarasuri has quoted from Utarani (v. 116), Helite (v. 40-41) and from 3469141611 (v. 180-181). Some Dohas are borrowed from the Apabhraisa illustrations given in the Siddhahema (8-4) e.g. v. 466-467. Several other Dohas are obviously borrowed from those that were popular and current during his times. v. no. 100 is possibly borrowed from the TAT&Tut of ifgarca (v. 67). At several places the author gives Pratikas only of the verses which must have been familiar. The following number of verses are not given in full in the MS. but only Pratika words are quoted : (1). Page #41 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [ 28 ] Form and Structure 1 The Form In the concluding Puspika the work is referred to as cafeteria787-afta, as 145- 4f0-qua-voist and as crccain-afta-14. At the end of the third Adhikara it is called You - 979122- -- Social CICISTINafat and TF- Titafu. In the beginning it is called afatin-147- afei. Thus, LC. is a f an cast in the mould of 1947. The principal feature that qualifies it to be called a TH is the use of numerous metres, with two or three metres dominating. Another peculiarity, not known so far from the previous tradition regarding the THC is free use of types of rhymned prose, besides the Prakrit, Apabhramsa and postApabhramsa metres. The poet revels in showing his skill in handling numerous metres and types of rhymed prose. Hence possibly the clain that LC. is rAsaka-cUDAmaNi 'the crest-jevel of the rAsakas.' Thus as regards the theine LC. is different from the Samdesarasaka which has an event as its theme and which is devoted to poetic treatment of that event, and consequently qualifies like Haga as a gust. LC. on the other hand is, as observed before, a Elftatotoh. One more point to be noted is the feature of dividing the poem into sections based on the divisions of the theme. Samdesarasaka is divided into three Prakramas, while LC, is divided into four Adhikaras. 2. Stucture General Observations. LC. is composed mostly in various metres (mostly Ergas and a few quiqas). Besides there are a few passages in rhymed prose and for a few passages a classical T is mentioned indicating the melody in which they were to be sung. Of the 26 metres used gAthA, dUhA, paddhaDI and cAli are in a majority. The language of the gAthAs and the autaus (1472021, pierfabilisa, FHITI) is Prakrit. Besides there are passages in rhymcd prosc. In many Old Gujarati texts, the sections called 50s and ads which were composed is some Matra-vitta and sung in Page #42 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [ 29 ] some popular Desi melody, many a time some clasical Raga is also mentioned, the characteristics notes of which marked the mode of singing that particular 50 or 6. In LC. four Vs. are mentioned according to which certain verscs are to be sung. LC, follows in its choice of metres the Bardic tradition as against the Classical Apabhramsa tradition (See SR. Indtroduction, p. 48-49). In the Apabhramsa Rasakas the standard metre was TAIAT45/17674. Instead in LC., as mentioned above, dUhA, paddhaDI and gAthA are preferred. For variation metres also we can see the influence of the Bardic tradition, represented by the Mini-US). As the text of LC, is based on the only one available manuscript, we have a number of lines which are metrically irregular. *** Description of the metres, Rhyming Prose-Types etc. 1. Language, Style and Literary Assessment The language of the verses in Gatha is Prakrit. The language of the verses in other metres besides that of the rhyming prose passage is Old Gujarati. But this latter statement is to be qualified somewhat. As remarked ealier, the author is guided is his composion of various metres by the works of Bardic tradition chiefly represented by the prAkRta paiMgala. Hence in the language of various metres there is a touch of the fi and DiMgala dialects. As to the style, the author shows his skill in poetic descriptions and drawing realistic pictures as and when required. He himself has said in his introduction that the LC. is sAlaMkAra, samArtha, sacchaMdasa, sarasa, saguNa and fed (echoing Abdal Rahanana's characterization of good poetry in the Samdesarasaka as adorned with lakkhaNa-chaMdAharaNa). Besides his comendable metrical skill Isvarasuri aquits himself very well in descriptions and delineation of sentiments. He takes full advantage of homonyms in Prakrit, Apabhramsa and Old Gujarati to weave zleSas as required by aDillA, yaDillA and also in a number of cAli passages. Page #52 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ [ 39 ] Works on the Story of Lalitanga The Story of Lalitamga is one of the several versions of the taletype designated as The Two Travellers (Type 613), which has a long history of more than fifteen hundred years and is found in Buddhist, Jain and Hindu literatures of India and in Arabian and European medieval literary works. The general line of development of the oral versins was worked out by R. Christiansen (The Tale of the Two Travellers or The Blinded Man. F.F. Comnitications No. 24, 1916). S. Thompson has treated this tale-type in The Folktale, p. 80-81. In the Jain tradition one version we find in santisuri's Puhavicamdacariya written in 1105 A.C. There it is given as an illustrative tale in the account of the fifth bhava of Prthvicandra. Dhana and Dharana were two brothers. Dhana was religious-minded, while Dharana was evil-minded and crafty. The latter gets the former involved in a debate about the superiority of Dharma or Adharma, and managing to defeat him blinds him as per condition of the debate. Latefon when Dhana gets miraculously cured and achieves great success and fame, Dharana tries to ruin Dhana by spreading scandals, but is himself killed in a plot he had laid. (Sec H.C. Bhyani, Lokkatha-na Mul ane Ku!.. 1990, p. 85-87). Again this tale-type is also familiar from Medieval Gujarati pocms like the Dharmabuddhi-rasa, Dharma-Pariksa-rasa (IGK. 7, p. 96). Two other Jain writers in Middle Gujarati occupied themselves with the life of Lalitamga, as we know froin the Jain Gurjar Kavio : Kramakalasa of Agama Gaccha wrote Lalitamgakumara-rasa in V.S. 1553 (=1497 A.C.) at Udayapura (JGK. revised edition, I, p. 201; no. 294). Danvijaya of the Tapa Gaccha wrote Lalitamga-rasa in V.S. 1761 (=1705 A.C.) at Jambusara. It has 27 Dhalas and 689 verses. The author says that his source was the biography given by Bhavadevasuri in the first Sarga of his Parsvanathacaritra (IGK., 5, p. 162-163, no. 3657).
