शृङ्गारार्णवचन्द्रिका
It is Rudrata5 3 who for the first time added Lāți to the three well known Ritis set forth by Vamana. Agnipurāņa 54 and Jayadeva's Candráloka 55 too speak of these four Ritis. In Bhoja's Sarasvatikaộthābharaṇa5 6 the Ritis number six with the addition of Avantikā and Māgadhi.
The definition of kiti given by the author is in agreement with the one set forth by Vidyānātha in his PRY57. Vidyānātha, however, speaks of three Rītis only, omitting Lāți as has been done by Mammața.
53. Rudraţa II. 3-6. Vāmana distinguishes Ritis on the
basis of qualities (Guņas ) present whereas Rudrața distinguishes them on the basis of the use of compounds. Vijayavarni clearly says that Ritis are based on the qualities possessed by words. In his definitions
of Ritis, however, he follows these two principles. 54. Chapter 340, vv.I-4. Dr. Raghavan corrects the text
of the fourth stanza (vide Some Concepts of
Alamkāra Sāstra, p. 180, f. n. 1) 55. Mayūkha VI. 21-22 56. Pariccheda II, Kārikās 2-3 57. Cf. vifaafa ICETTÉTEHT HTI-PRY. p. 63 and माधुर्यादिगुणोपेतपदानां घटनात्मिका।
-Śrngārārnavacandrikā VI-3. Vidyānātha's definition is, however, based on Vamana's Sūtras 1, 2, 7-8.
