INTRODUCTION

The definitions of the four Rītis as laid down in ŚC58 and Alamkārasaägraha are in close agreement. The definitions of the three Rītis are partly in agreement with those of Vāmana 59.
In Chapter VII the author treats of six Vịttis1. Kaišikī, 2. Arabhatī, 3. Bhāratī, 4. Sättvati, 5. Madhyamā Kaisikí and 6. Madhyamā Arabhatī. These six Vịttis are first dealt with by Bhoja in his Sarasvatīkanthābharaṇa, but as Sabdālamkāras ( Chapter II. 34-38 ) and after him by Vidyānātha in his PRY ( Kāvyaprakaraña, pp. 57-63 ). Vijayavarņi's treatment of this topic bears remarkable resemblance to that of Vidyānātha's. 60.
In chapter VIII we find an exposition of the conception of Sayyā and Pāka. No doubt, the conception of Pāka is found in Vāmana's Kāvyālaskārasūtra-vștti and Rajasekhara's Kāvyamīmāṁsā, but the striking thing is that the definitions of Sayyā and Pāka as given by Vijayavarņi are in close agreement with the corresponding ones in Vidyānātha's PRY:61

and Chapter V. vv. 9-12. 59. Kāvyālamkārasūtravștti 1-2. 11-13. 60. Vide Appendix61. If it were accepted that Vijayavarņi modelled his
definitions of Sáyyā and Pāka on those of Vidyānātha
