________________ Jaina Kośa Literature : 127 purposes at a time i.e. a single dictionary dealing with meaning, etymology and introduction. (2) Language, the dictionaries may be Uni-lingual, Bi-lingual and Polyglot. (3) Entries, the nature of dictionaries may differ as per the entries of words (general words, technical words, geographical, historical and mythological proper names, idioms and proverbs. (4) Period, some may deal with the words of a specific period while others in historical perspective showing evolution. (5) Meaning, dictionaries may deal with words of similar meanings, antonyms, single meanings etc. (6) Arrangement of Entries, mostly the dictionaries of modern period are arranged in alphabetical order while a few ones list words as per the number of syllables in the words. A few ones also have arrangement of words in reverse order. Again, some contain words arranged according to the alphabet of the roots. All the allied words pertaining to a root are clubbed under the particular root and (7) Specific Purpose, from this view -point the dictionaries may be twofold: General and Linguistics. According to Prof. Tiwari, the Kośas or dictionaries may be broadly divided into three categories: (1) Dictionary of words, (2) Dictionary of Subject and (3) Others. (1) The former category Dictionary of words may again be sub-classified into that of (i) words of a particular work, (ii) words of a work or works of a particular author, (iii) words of a particular genre e.g. prose or poetry, Purāņa, Campū etc. (iv) particular period, (v) dialects, (vi) languages, (vii) Synonym, (viii) Antonym, (ix) Abbreviation, (x) Homonyms, (xi) Usage, (xii) Index, (xiii) Technical terms, (xiv) Word- family, (xv) Roots, (xvi) Rhythms, (xviii) Descriptive Dictionary, (xviii) Historical Dictionary, (xix) Comparative Dictionary, (xx) Pronunciation Dictionary and (xxi) Etymological dictionary. (2) Second category Visayakoșas or Dictionaries of subject may be classified into that of (A) single subject: (i) Koșa, (ii) Encyclopaedia, (iii) Technical and (iv) Collection of Anthology, (B) Multi-subject: (i) Encyclopaedia, (ii) Dictionary of Proper names and (iii) Collection of anthology. Most of the above sub-types are self-explanatory making the explanation superfluous. However, the nature of some of these is given henceforth for better comprehension.
