(NCC. X. p.116). 3. Abhidhānacintāmaņināmamálā (Sanskrit) by Hemacandra
(1088- 1172 AD), is a famous lexicon, containing 1542 verses in different metres, divided into 6 Kāndas (sections). This Kośa is a collection of the conventional, derivative and mixed words of one sense type. The first Devādhideva Kānda, in 86 verses, comprises the names and the Atiśayas etc. of 24 Tīrthankaras. The second Devakānda, containing 250 verses, treats of the Jaina, Brahmanical and Buddhist gods and terms pertaining to them. The third Martya Kānda contains in 597 verses, the words relating to human beings in their different relations and the objects used by them. The fourth Bhūmikānda deals, in 423 verses, with the names of animals, birds, vegetables, minerals etc. The fifth Narakakānda, in 7 verses, enumerates the beings of the nether world and in the last Sāmānyakānda, in 178 verses, it deals with the abstract notions such as sound, smell, adjectives and the indeclinable. The Abhidhānacintamani begins with a description of the Rūdha (conventional), Yaugika (derivative) and Miśra (mixed) terms. The conventional terms lack derivation. Derivative ones are proved by roots etc. The mixed terms have the features of both conventional and derivative terms. For gender, author's Lingānuśāsana is referred to. Stating the utility of the lexicon, Heinacandra says that oration and versification as said by the learned are the result of erudition, but both these cannot be possible without the knowledge of words. Hemacandra not only included the synonym words herein but also important materials related with linguistic. He collected as much word as he could and underlined the similarity between the old and new words. From the linguistic points of view, this work fully demonstrated the influence of words, contained in Prakrit, Apabhramsa and Deśya languages. Pub. The text with German trans.
