candra (1088- 1172 AD) is a lexicon of Deśi words. Composed in 783 Prakrit Aryā meters, it is divided into 8 Vargas (sections) Svaravarga, Kavargădi, Cavargādi, Țavargādi, Tavargādi, Pavargādi, Yakārādi and Sakārādi. Each section has a supplement, dealing with words having more than one meaning. The words are arranged according to their meanings and the number of syllables. Hemacandra defines Deśi words as those, which are in use in Prakrit since time immemorial. His auto- commentary on Deśīnāmamālā opens with the observation that the words, not derived Sanskrit through admissible rules based on phonological process of omission, addition and alteration, were collected in it. While defining the scope of his work, he pointed out that he intended not to compile a dictionary of all such words, current during his times in various regions i.e. the words of regional dialects, current in day to day practice. Rather he was concerned with only that class of nonderivable words of literary Prakrit, handed down over an immemorably long and horae tradition. Accordingly, this lexicon should include only such words as used in ancient Prakrit literature and which cannot be derived from their Sanskrit prototypes. Deśīnāmamälā gives the meaning of about 4000 words. If words with multiple meanings are counted as separate words, the number may go up by a thousand. In this lexicon, Hemacandra quotes Abhimănacihna, Avantisundari etc. works and Devaraja,
