________________ १०५ : श्रमण जुलाई-सितम्बर/१९९७ We can also observe that those editions of the Upāsakadaśānga which do not mention that reading, which contain the word Guņavrata. The readings are as follows : तएणं समणे भगवं महावीरे आणंदस्स गाहावईस्स गाहावईस्स तीसेय महति .... तएणं समणे भगवं महावीरे आणन्दस्स गाहावइस्स तीसे५ TOP AHUT TO HER 3710TGHH MTETEFI ....................... The above investigation has raised some fundamental problems viz. I. That the concept of Guņavrata is as old as the Upāsakadaśānga, II. That this concept is not so old as the Upāsakadaśānga, That III Guņa vrata is a later concept of the vows, and Iv. That it is a developed concept. If we try to discuss on all these points, we have following findings :- Now, the question is out of the above mentioned editions of Upāsakadaśanga which one is correct, whether those which contain that reading wherein Guņavrata incited are correct or those volums are correct which do not mention that reading. On the basis of only one reading we can not conclude like that and also not raise the question of the authenticity of those editions. Here, we can only #ry to find out the sources of that reading. Because, if it is not an original reading of the Upāsakadaśarga, it means it is an addition and has some sources. According to the Jain a scholrs the Guņavrata is rather new and a developed concept. As the Upāsakadaśānga is very old and this concept should not have been mentioned in it. Here we quote the view of Dr. S.M. Jain, an eminent Jain a scholar?-" The divisions of Gunavrata and Sikşāvrata came in existence after the composition of the Upāsakadaśānga and the Tattavārthasūtra. Those Jain scriptures mentioning such types of division are not so old. They are composed after those two scriptures". Thus, we opine that the reading of the Upāsakadaśānga that mentions the concept of Guņavrata is not an original reading of this Āgama. It is a later interpolation. Now, we would like to find out the sources of this reading. We used the copies of the Upāsakadaśānga edited by Ācārya Tulsi and *Madhukar Muni for investing the sources of that reading.
