________________ १३९ : श्रमण/जुलाई-सितम्बर / १९९७ Name of the Book - Rāmapāṁivāda's Uṣāṇiruddhaṁ, Editor - V. M. Kulkarni, Publisher - Sharadaben Chimanbhai, Educational Research Centre, Ahmedabad 380 004 It is a fine piece of Prakrit ornate poetry in the form of Khandakavya comprising four Sargas in 280 verses. It was originally edited by Prof. A. N. Upadhye and was published in the Journal of university of Bombay in 1941. The present edition under review is based on the same. The subject matter of the Usāņiruddham has been drawn from the Bhāgavata the famous Mahāpurāṇa. The love story of the Uṣā and Aniruddha is also found in many other Sanskrit works like the Viṣṇu Purāṇa, Harivamsa and the Padmapurāna. Rāmapaṇivāda, the author flourished in the 18th century A.D i.e. in the last period of the Prakrit literature. The other important work by the same author is the Kamsavaho. It has been written in the Mahātāṣtrī Prakrit in the Vaidarbhi style though the use of long compound is also seen here and there. The metres used are Anustubh, Drutavilambita, Puspitāgra, Upajāti and Vaitalīya. The predominent Rasa is Șringāra, the poet is not satisfied with the prosaic narration. He has embellished it with the richness of poetic imagery and various Alaṁkāras. The influence of the Kālidāsa and other poets is also discrnible in it. The following verses can been compared in this context. The following are the fine illustrations of प्रतीयमानोत्प्रेक्षा And अपह्नुति respectively मा दे मुहेंदुणा होज्ज दिवा वि रअणिव्भमो । इअ एस विरिचेण अंकितो रअणी करो ॥ यं वा कुमुदिनी विप्पवाससोअ मलीमसं । हिअअं से पआसेइ सच्छदाए कुदो मिओ | उसा० 4/ 58,59 The text is accompanied with the Sanskrit chāyās. According to Prof. Upadhye the Sanskrit Chaya contrary to the usual practice precedes the Prakrit in the original text. It is doubtful whether the chāyā is also Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
