INTRODUCTION
From the above computation, the following points become clear : 1.0, numbers the chapters upto 23, and, unlike P., combines chapters 18 and 19 into one and calls it Vyapti-kalaha 'controversy over pervasion. It is rather strange that I. O. fails to give numbers for the last two chapters : fabdanityata-vada and aśvara-vada. Moreover, 1.0. does not name the vadas or prakaranas for the last few chapters (from 20 to 27). Both P. and I. O. have not separated anupalabdhi-vada from abhava-dada, and thus, both of them have only 26 chapters. And both have placed abhava-cum-anupalabdhivada between artha patti-vada and sabdānityatu-vāda. A considerable portion of the text of the anyathakhyati-vāda from I. 0. has unfortunately been destroyed.
The Limbdi ms. separates vyāpti-vāda from vyapti-graha-vada by a llall only. Abhava-yada and anupalabdhi-vada are arranged here as two concluding chapters. Folio 75a bas a colophon "ity abhava-vādah' after which anupalabdhi-vada follows. But folio 76b contains the concluding portion of anu palabd hi-yāda without any colophon, Thus, in fact, when, all vadas are counted we get 27 vadas, i. e., 27 chapters. The order of the concluding chapters in Limbļi ms., unlike that in I. O., are as follows:
23 arthapatti-vada 24 Sabdanityata-vada 25 zśvara-yāda 26 abhava-vada
27 anupalabdhi-vada Both M, and M, agree with the Limbļi ms. in this respect. Accordingly, I have accepted the number of chapter to be 27 (and not 26 as found in P. and I. o.). I have also accepted the sequence of the concluding chapters following these three manuscripts.
It is also interseting to see that the Limbdi manuscript concludes chapters 24 and 25 as follows: Folio 64a : iti mahopadhyāya-śri-Sasad hara-kytau yadatra prakaranam
śabdanityata. Folio 70b : iti mahopadhyāya. Śri-Sasadhara-kytau Nyāyaratne prakaran
am iśvarasya samāptam, One can imagine that the scribe might have first thought that the text ended with Tšvara-vada. Since we know that both 1.0, and P.end with Tsvaravada we can infer that a reason for such a scribal confusion might have existed. It is probable that the scribe had actually used two manuscripts while copying the Limbdi ms. Probably the first original ended with the Tsvaravāda. and the Abhava-vada and the Anupalabdhi-vada were supplied from the
