अर्वाचीन (यानी परवर्ती काल की महाराष्ट्री) प्राकृत भाषा में (मध्यवर्ती व्यंजन) "क-ग--च-ज-त-द-प-य-व" के लोप के नियम का अनुसरण जिस प्रकार से देखने को मिलता है वैसा और उस प्रमाण में प्राचीन काल में नहीं था। उसी प्रकार (मध्यवर्ती महाप्राण व्यंजन) "ख-घ-थ-ध-भ" (को 'ह'कार में बदलने के) वगैरह नियमों (सिद्धहेम. ८-१-१७७ और १८७) को भी इतना स्थान प्राप्त नही था। इस कारण से प्राचीन प्राकृत और अर्वाचीन प्राकृत में
