PARESHNATH HILL.
posed starting as an Hotel. I built a large receiving Bungalow 100 feet long by 80 feet wide, at the foot of the Hill (Nimaghat) started a Parisnath Express Horse Dak from Barakur to the foot of the Hill, furnished the buildings on the Hill in a modest way, put a staff servant with supplies in charge, advertised and waited to sec what would come of it and I regret to say that the result was not very encouraging. As my contract work on the road and in Hazaribagh only permitted me to visit the Hill occasionally; I proposed getting up a Limited Company, with sufficient capital to erect some cottages for rental and to have a Manager and Staff für general supervision for affairs on the Hill, and at the foot of the Hill as also the Horse-Dak from Barakar.
I advertised the Company and then the Jains came in with the following hereunder advertisement,-and of course the Company collapsed as investors will under no circumstances put there money into a concern that has the prospect of a Law Suit behind it:
NOTICE.
The Parisnath Company Limited, having published a prospectus, notice of which was published in the "Engli. shman" and "Indian Daily News" papers of the 6th June last to establish a first class Hotel, on Parishnath Hill etc, vide the said prospectus, the public are hereby informed that the Hill has belonged from time immemorial to the Jain Setambari Sect who have temples thereon dedicated to the Thakur Parishnathjee, from whom the said hill derives its name, and the members of the Jain Setambari Sect. will at all times oppose by all legal means in their the power slaughter of animals on the said Hill, or any act by which their religious feelings may be offended: they carry their veneration so far as to worship

even the stones lying on the said hill, and do not go thereon with their shoe on. Any person intending to take shares in the said Company is hereby informed of the intentions on the Jain Setambari Sect, and will take them at his own risk.

The leader of the Jain Sitambari on being tackled over this advertisement, denied all knowledge of it, denied that Khajooram Johorry was their Agent, and denied all responsibility in the matter and hinted that Khajooram probably belonged to the airy clad sect. " I might sue him if I chose. I was not surprised at this answer as people who are capable of forging an Akbar's Sunnud" don't hesitate at such trifles, as repu diating their agent's actions. On enquiry I found that suing Khajooram was useless and while considering the matter in Calcutta, I received news: that my godown at Nimaghat had been burnt to the ground, all the dak carriages, some 500 venetian doors and sashes, together with a large quantity of sal sleepers stacked fifty. feet away from the godowns, had been reduced to ashes and many of the horses maimed and rendered worthless."On returning to Nimaghat 1 found everything wrecked and to complete the catastrophe, a cyclone a few days. afterwards unroofed the barrack and a portion of the large bungalow on the Hill. The repairs of these buildings the Rajah (Landlord) declined. to make good, so I came to the conclu sion there was nothing for it but to shake the dust of Parianath from my feet, which I did and I have never visited the place since.
A year or two after I abandoned the place the Government bought back the buildings which they had previously
