22. आँवले (आमलक) के पेड़ पर खेल।
श्री वर्द्धमान सब का प्रेम-भाजन होकर लाड़-प्यार से बढ़ रहा था। वह अपनी आठवीं सालं की उम्र में अपने मित्रों के साथ आँवले के पेड़ पर चढ़कर खेल रहा था। उस समय एक डरावना साँप उस पेड़ पर लिपट गया। शेष बालक डर के मारे काँप गये पर वर्द्धमान ने विचलित हुए बिना उस साँप को अनायास पकड़ कर एक तरफ फेंक दिया। शेष बालकों को अचरज हुआ। यह उनकी हिम्मत का प्रतीक है।
22 PLAYING ON THE AMALAKA TREE
From the moment he was born, Shri Vardhamana was the apple of the eye not only of the parents but also of all those around. Once, in his eighth year, Vardhamana was playing on an Amalaka tree along with his friends, when a terrible serpent coiled itself around the trunk. When the rest of the children were quaking with fear, Vardhamana caught hold of the serpent effortlessly and threw it away to a great distance. The other children were filled with surprise at this act of bravery on the part of Mahavira, who was only a small boy then.
