54. यज्ञ शाला में गोष्ठी
सौमिल यज्ञ-शाला के प्रवेश द्वार पर खड़ा रहा और ग्यारह ऋत्विजों में से एक एक को यज्ञशाला में आने के लिये आमंत्रित कर रहा था। पहले पहल उसने गोवर गाँव के निवासी वसुभूति के पुत्र गौतम गोत्र के इन्द्रभूति, वायु भूति, और अग्निभूति का स्वागत किया। इसके बाद उसके आमंत्रण पर कोल्लाग निवासी भारद्वाजस गोत्र का 'व्यक्त अग्नि व्यौस्यायन गोत्र का सुधर्म, मौर्य राज्य का निवासी तथा वशिष्ट गोत्र का मंडित, कोशलवासी हरितस गोत्र का अचलभद्र, कास्यप गोत्र का मौर्य पुत्र, मिथिला निवासी गौतम गोत्र का अंकपित, तुंगराज्य वासी कौण्डिन्य गोत्र का मातर्या, राजगृह नगर वासी कौण्डिन्य गोत्र का प्रभास आये । अन्य लोग अपने शिष्यों के साथ आये। सौमिल ने उनसे यज्ञ का आरंभ करने की प्रार्थना की। उसी क्षण आकाश मार्ग से देव गण अपने अपने दिव्य विमानों बैठकर सौमिल के पास न जाकर श्रमण भगवान महावीर की ओर वायुवेग से गये । हमेशा ऐसे अवसरों पर आकर यज्ञ का दर्शन करने वाले देवगणों का सौमिल के पास न आकर इस बार महावीर के पास जाना देखकर सौमिल और उसके ऋत्विज आश्चर्य में पड गये । इस अनोखी बात पर चर्चा करते हुए वे यज्ञशाला में रह गये। यज्ञ की गोष्ठी में देवगणों का पधारना एक प्रथा है।
54 DISCUSSION AT THE YAGNA SHALA
(THE PLACE OF THE SACRIFICIAL CEREMONY)
Soumil stood at the entrance of the Yagnashala and invited the Rithviks in one after another. The first to be invited were Indrabhuti, Vayubhuti and Agnibhuti, the sons of Vasubhuti of Gauthama Gotra - these belong to Gowara. The next to be welcomed were Vyakta of Village Kollaga and belonging to Bharadwaja Gotra, Sudharma of Agnivysyana, the scholar Vasistha Manditha of the Maurya, Mauryaputra of the Gothra of Kasyapa, Gautham Akampitha of Mithila, Achalabhadra, belonging to Harithasa Gothra from the kingdom of Kausala, Matharya of Kaundinyasa Gothra from the Kingdom of Thunga, Prabhasa of Kaundinyasa Gothra from the town of Rajagriha in that order. He then requested the Rithviks to start performing the Yajna assisted their disciples numbering 4,400. At same time, the heavenly hosts, in their divine planes, were travelling in the direction of Samavasarana at a great speed. This strange phenomenon filled the 'minds of Soumil and the Rithviks with wonder, because on such occasions, it was customary for heavenly hosts to pay a visit to the sight of the Yajna. So, Soumil and the Rithviks were overcome with sadness and began to discuss the phenomenon.
