समव शरणम
इस प्रकार केवल ज्ञान (महान ज्ञान) की प्राप्ति से प्रसिद्ध हुए भगवान महावीर अत्यन्त उत्कृष्ट समवशरम पर आसीन हुए थे। इस प्रकार बैठे हुए स्वामीजी समस्त देवगण, मानव गण, जन्तु-जाति और इस आकर्षण कारी जगत की समस्त जीवराशि को अपनी तरफ आकृष्ट कर सके । वहाँ से एक योजन (लगभग ८ से १० मील था १२ से १६ किलो मीटर) की दूरी (फासले) पर सौमिल नामक एक ब्राह्मण ग्यारह अन्य ब्राह्मण ऋत्विजों को लिये यज्ञ करने पर कटिबद्ध (उद्युक्त या संसिद्ध) हुआ था। उन ग्यारह ऋत्विजों में गौतम गोत्र के तीन भाई भी शामिल थे। जिन के नाम इन्द्रभूति, वायुभूति और अग्निभति हैं। इस बात को अपनी दिव्य दृष्टि से जानकर श्री महावीर अपने जिन धर्म के अनुसार उस यज्ञ को रोक रखने के लिये जो उनके कर्तव्य का एक भाग (हिस्सा) है, कटिबद्ध हुए। केवल ज्ञान को प्राप्त करने के बाद स्वामी जी का दिव्य प्रवचन जो सब से प्रथम है; वह सुनने के लिये समस्त जन उत्सुकता के साथ समव शरण की तरफ चल पड़े।
SAMAVASARANA
Thus endowed with Supreme Knowledge, Shramana Bhagawan Mahavira was then seated upon a holy pulpit on which only a Jina can sit - it is in the shape of a lotus. From this divine seat the Swamy was able to attract all types of animate, human and divine orders. He was the centre of attraction of all types of souls which orbited him. In the meantime, at a distance of one yojana from that spot (about 8 to 10 miles / 12 to 16 Kilometres in present day terms), a Brahmin by name Soumil was making arrangements to perform a great Yajna (a sacrificial performance) with the help of Eleven Rithviks (officiating priests). The more important of these Rithviks were Indrabhuti, Vayubhuti and Agnibhuti - three brothers belonging to the Gothra (lineage) of Gautama. Shramana Bhagawan Mahavira with his divine vision was able to know of this attempt on the part of Soumil and was bent upon stopping the sacrifice of animal life in this performance as this intention was a part and parcel of Jaina Dharma (the duty of a Jaina). This public oration was the first on the part of Shramana Bhagawan Mahavira after he had attained Supreme Knowledge and so people from all walks of life turned their steps in the direction of Samavasarana.
