48. प्रत्यक्ष देवता
स्वामी पुरिमटाल पहुँचे । वहाँ वग्गूरू नामक एक व्यापारी था। उनकी पत्नी का नाम भद्र था। उन्हें बच्चे नहीं थे। वे दोनों एक बार सैर करने के लिए वहाँ के राज बगीचा की ओर गये थे। वहाँ खण्डहरों में 'अहँतमल्लि' का मंदिर था । वहाँ के मन्दिर की स्थिति देखकर, मंदिर के अन्दर अर्हत मल्लि को प्रमाम करके दोनों ने हाथा जोड़कर शपथ ली कि - अगर हमको सन्तान हुई तो इस मंदिर को पुनर्निमाण करेंगे। कुछ ही दिनों में उनको सन्तान हुई । तभी से पतिपत्नी उस मंदिर को पुनर्निर्माण करने लगे। वे दोनों वह मंदिर के तीर्थंन्कर को सेवा कर रहे थे। जिस दिन देवी की पूजा करने के वास्ते आये उस दिन महावीर स्वामी मंदिर के द्वार पर अंतरमुखी होकर एकाग्र ध्यान में खड़े हुए थे। वे दोनों मंदिर के द्वार पर खड़े हुए स्वामी की ओर ध्यान न देकर मंदिर के भगवान की पूजा करने लगे । तब दिव्यवाणी ने कहा - यह कितना अचरज का दृश्य है ! आँखों के सामने सजीव खड़े हुए स्वामी को छोड़कर, मंदिर में निर्जीव पत्थर की पूजा मानव कर रहे हैं। दिव्यवाणी की बातों को सुनकर पति-पत्नी ने अपनी भूल को पहचानकर स्वामी को प्रणाम किया । अपने मन के संतृप्त होने तक स्वामी को सेवा करके अपने घर चल गये ।
48 DIVINITY IN HUMAN FORM
After a long journey Bhagawan Mahavira reached Purimtal. There lived in the town a businessman by name Vaggur. His wife was Bhadra. The couple was childless. Once Vaggur and Bhadra went for a walk through the royal gardens. There they saw a temple in ruins. It was devoted to Tirthankara Malli. Then the couple vowed that they would renovate the temple, if they were blessed with an issue. Soon after this incident the couple was blessed with a child. From that time onwards Vaggur and his wife devoutly worshipped their Tirthankar after having rebuilt the temple. One day when they came to the temple to worship the Tirthankar as usual, they saw the Swami stood at the threshold in deep Dhyana. However, they did not attach much importance to the presence of the Swami and were engaged in the ritual of worship. Then they heard the celestial voice addressing them and saying thus “What a wonder that people have been worshipping a stone idol ignoring the Divinity present in human shape right in front”. Along with the others this couple also heard this celestial voice and having realised that the Divinity in human shape was the Swami himself, at once went up to him, prostrated themselves at his feet and having paid their respects, went back home.
