50. चन्दन बाला का वृत्त (चरित्र)
स्वामी जी चंपानगर में जा पहुँचे । दघिवाहन उस राज्य का पालन करते थे। उनका पत्नी का नाम था घरणी और बेटी का नाम वसुमति । स्वामीजी का उस शहर में पहुँचने के पहले से वत्स राज्य के राजा शतानीक अपने सेनाध्यक्ष काकुमुख के साथ उस नगर पर चढ़ाई कर दी। उसने उस नगर का विध्वंश करके राजा दघिवाहन और राणी घरणी को मार डाला । काकुमुख ने राज कुमारी वसुमति को बन्दी बनाया और वहाँ के आचार-व्यवहार के अनुसार दासी के रूप में बेचने के लिये हाटमें उसे ठहराया। वसुमति को खरीदने के लिये कोई नहीं आया। सब लोग खड़े होकर सिर्फ देख रहे हैं - "कौन राजकुमारी को खरी देंगे ?" उसी मार्ग से जाते हुए प्रमुख व्यापारी घनवाहन उस कन्या की दयनीय (सोचनीय) स्थिति पर तरस कर, उसको अपनी बेटी के बराबर मान कर घन चुकाकर अपने घर को ले गये। अपनी पत्नी मूला को इस कन्या का चन्दनबाला के नाम से परिचय दिया । चन्दनबाला के नाम से पुकारते हुए राजकुमारी वसुमति के सौन्दर्य को देखकर घनवाहन की पत्नी मूला ईर्ष्या करने लगे । व्यापारी के घर में न होने का समय देखकर उसने नाई को बुलाया और चन्दनवाला का सिर मुड़वाया । इससे सुन्तुष्ट न होकर उसने उसे जंजीरों (साँकलों) से बँधवाया और घर के भूगर्भ की कोठरी में गुप्त रूप से बन्दी बनवा कर रख दिया ।

By and by the Swami entered the city of Champa. The Kingdom was being ruled by King Dadhivahana. The queen was Dharani and the Princess was Vasumathi. Already by the time the Swami reached this city, it had been invaded by King Shatanika of the Kingdom of Vatsa along with his Commander-in-Chief Kakumukha. The city was sacked and King Dadhivahana and queen Dharani were killed. Kakumukha, the Commander-in-Chief took princess Vasumathi captive and, in accordance with the then prevailing custom, tried to sell away the princes as a slave in the local shandy. As Vasumathi was a princess nobody came forward to offer a suitable price. A certain merchant by name Dhanavahana happened to pass along the route and saw the pitiable state in which the princess was. He felt like a parent towards the princess, paid the quoted price and took her along with him to his own home. There he introduced her to his wife Moola as Chandanabala, a maiden. Now Moola was affected by jealousy at the beauty of the princess and was bent upon harming her. One day, when Dhanavahana was away from home, Moola sent for a barber and had Chandanabala tonsured. Then Moola had the princess shackled and imprisoned in an underground cell in the house.
