42. गंगा नदी की ओर प्रयाण
विशाल और गंभीर गंगा के तट पर स्वामी बैठे हुए थे। वे गंगा के प्रवाह और उसमें उठती हुई तरंगों को देख रहे थे। उस समय उनके मन में भी लहरों की भान्ति उमंगें उठ रही थीं। वे अपने अन्तर्मुखी मन में उठते हुए भावों को बडी निपुणता के साथ दबा रहे थे। सुरभि-ग्रामवासी वहाँ से गंगा को पार करने के लिये सिद्धदत्त की नाव का उपयोग किया करते थे। कुछ लोग गंगा पार करने के लिये आकर नाव पर बैठ गये थे। सिद्ध दत्त ने नाव में आकर बैठने के लिये किनारे पर बैठे हुए स्वामी का आह्वान किया । नाव में स्वामी के बैठने के बाद नाव का चलना शुरू हो गया। कुछ दूर जाने के बाद मौसम (वातावरण) बदल गया। आसमान में काले काले बादल छा गये । बादल गरजने लगे और बिजली कौंधने लगी। नदी में ऊपर उठती हुई लहरों के कारण नाव डाँवा डोल होने लगी। नाव में बैठे हुए लोग अपनी जानों को हथेली में रख कर भय भीत होकर जोर जोर से चीखने - चिल्लाने लगे। केवल महावीर स्वामी ही अविचल मन से, ध्यान मग्न हो कर, आसपास चारों ओर की परिस्थिति को भूलकर आत्मदर्शन कर रहे थे। ऐसी स्थिति में देखने पर नाव में यात्रा करने वालों को अचरज हुआ। स्वामी को देखते ही उनके मन में धैर्य आया । सब लोग स्वामी को प्रणाम करते रहे और अन्त में नाव सुरक्षित रूप से किनारे पर पहुंची।

On the way to Surabhipura, the Swami stood on the banks of the Ganga, the broad and majestic perennial river, observing the waves rising high into the air. He was deftly suppressing the feelings of his own mind trying to rise in consonance with the rising waves. But, they became calm in the mind of the Swami who was a picture of completely subdued passions. Now it was customary for the people of Surabhipura to use the boat of Siddhadatta to ferry them across the river. Finding the Swami standing on the banks, Siddhadatta invited Mahavira also to step into the boat. After the Swami was seated, the boat began to move. But after the boat had forded a part of the river there was a sudden change in the weather and black clouds filled the sky threatening to generate a gale and a heavy downpour. The lofty waves of the agitated river were intent on upsetting the boat. While all the other passengers were shouting and crying for help for fear that the boat would overturn and capsize, Bhagawan Mahavira sat undisturbed, absorbed in calm meditation. Now the other passengers were filled with wonderment at the unperturbed state of the Swami and were themselves reassured by it. They saluted the Swami in silent reverence and were greatly rewarded for this transformation in their minds, when the boat safely reached the other bank. Then the passengers alighted from the boat, bowed to the Swami and expressed their gratitude for saving their lives. The Swami gave them Abhaya (reassurance and blessings) and continued his journey in the direction of Vajrabhoomi.
