Editorial
We have great pleasure and satisfaction in bringing out the special issue of Pathik on Museums of Gujarat. It includes valuable research and informative articles on the variety of museums of Gujarat.
Museums are the citadel of artifacts and the guardian of our national heritage. They are an important aid to our country's cultural regeneration. A greater integration of muscums with our educational systein helps to spread consciousness of our country's legacy and instil a sense of pride in young people.
The idea of museums has changed greatly everywhere in recent years. No longer a passive place for sheltering collections, the contemporary museum has become an active instrument of society in educating, mostly directly but in broader terms it offers something for every age and category of tourists.
Since museums present the saga of events from prehistoric times, through the dawn of human civilization till the present day, they collect, preserve and present the tools and artifacts of the past so that the past is not missing from the present. With this in view museums have come to occupy the place of community centres and educational institutions. They are the media for communicating the message of wisdom, national integration and heritage.
The publication of this valuable special issue of Pathik on Museums of Gujarat became possible due to the publication grant sanctioned by the department of Archaeology, Gujarat State and to the enthusiatic efforts of writing articles by various scholars on museums and muscum activities in Gujarat and also to untiring services of Krishna Printery. We are heartily thankful to all of them. We acknowledge our thankfulness to Dr. Nirmala Sharma who beyond her busy schedule spared time to design the cover page of this issue.
