Tantrism has a hoary antiquity, belief in magic and witchcraft is primitive and the use of charms, amulets etc. was universal from very early times; worship of symbolical diagrams traced from Vedic terms; Mahavira believed in supernatural powers, which he called Rddhis Labdhis; Gods possess powers of transformation and supernatural cognition, powers of amarasausadhi, vikriya-labdhi, carana saints can move in space; Vidyanupravada-purana dealt with powerful vidyas; in the 2nd or 3rd century B.c. Jainism knew of both the pure and the impure form of mantras and Vidyas; evidence of the growth of the Jain Tantra in the early centuries of the Christian era supplied by the Panmacarium of Vimala Suri; before the 3rd or the 4th century of the Christian era, Jainism had a Tantra of its own based upon ancient traditions. 2468 B.
