therefore for that purpose reproduce here the relevant words of some of the inscriptions published in the Epigraphia Carnatica.
1. Inscription at Homma (IV, p. 10 ff.), dated 8th July 1380, recording the grant of a sarvamânya (i.e., tax-free) village by Ballapa, governor of Hadinâlu to Bhûtêndi-háruva :
dévara sthanika Bhútandi-haruvam....lige hiran ya dhari-párvakam mádi Candrdrlalärama baram sarvamányay dgi, i.e., 'as tax-free gift to Bhútandi-håruva trustee for the [image of that) god, with pouring of water and gold, to endure as long as the moon, sun and stars.'
2. Karakala-madahalli inscription (IV, p. 60 tf.), dlated in 1497 A.D., recording the grant by Canna-naħjardja Odeyar of Ummattúruto Narasimhabhatta of a village : & gråmavanu nimage sa-hiranyódala-dana-dhárúpârvakavvigi sarvaminya uigi koffu, i.e., having given that village to you tax-free with pouring of water and gift of gold."
3. Harihara inscription (XI, p. 13 ff.), dated 20th January 1562, recording a donation by Margasahảya-nayaka to the Harihara temple : Ganganara si embar grâmaranu sarvamánya-jirņôddharava madli samarpisi, i.e., 'having granted the village Ganganarási after making it tax-free.'
4. Puttanapura inscription (IV, p. 14 ff.), daied apparently on Uuh December 1846, recording the grant of a village by the mahama daleśvara (name defaced) to a Lingåyata guru of Ummattūru : grâmada simeyannu nimage srvumanysági kottevu, i.e., 'we have given to you tax-free the village [limited by the afore-mentioned) boundaries.'
5. Citaldrug inscription (XI, p. 4 ff.), dated 1st August 1328, recording a grant made by Ballappa-dandanayaka and Singeya-dançanayaka : Bernedoneyanu....cfabhoga-lejassvimya-nidhi-nikx@pa-siddha-sidhya-jalapásúna-sahitavági....sarumanyavági, i.e.,
the village Bennedone free of taxes and with estabhônga-té jussurémya, nidhi, nikwepa, siddha, sådhya, jala, and påşdna.'
6. Bêlûr grant of Harihara II of Vijayanagara (V, p. 211 ff.), dated in 1385 A.D., reoording the gift of a village to some Brahmaņas : grûmann Ghattadahal!iti samakhya-sobhitan dhruvam Sarvajña-sri-Harihara-maharaja-purákhyayê nidhi-nikepa-salila-pápdragami-sádkyakamsiddhaksinayutam castabhoga-svimyldi-samkulam il ngraharam imam sarvamanyam a-candra-tárakam
7. Hulikere grant of Harihara II of Vijayanagara (V, p. 520 ff.), cated on 4th December 1378, recording the gift of a village to some Brahmanas : Jambiranu Honnalápuravígi mádi....d-catus-sîme-volag-ulla nidhi-nikş@pa-jala-púsana-siddha-sûdhya-astabhogatējassamya-samasta-ba!i-sahita-vägi sarvamânyarigi kotta, i.e., 'having granted Jambūru ag tax-free village after renaming it Honnalapura, with nidhi, nikşêxa, jalu, pàgina, siddha, sidhya, astabhoga-tejasswimya and the revenues from all taxes within ito four boundaries.'
8. Sadahalli grant of Devaraya of Vijayanagara (IX, p. 106 ff.), dated 22nd November 1425, recording the gift of three villages to a Brahmana named Kesava.....adát su-manoharam kiranyodaka-dhârâptam sarvamânyagraharakam | e-candra-tára-bhogartham akrilopddhi-düritam nidhi-niksepa págúna-jala-sekharitântaram catus-simodara-gatair astabhogair alamkrtam agaminim chéesánam bhoganám api bhajanam | sthinam kariyamaninam tataka. kpetra-sampadam

Mudiyanûr grant of Bukkaraya of Vijayanagara (X, p. 135 ff.), dated in 1344 A.D., recording the grant of a village to Somaņa-Nácana the Telugu poet : Penamagani-vilhydtam sarva-sasyopasobhitam | Bukkarayapuråkhyáta-pratinamna ca sobhitam || nidhi-nikpepa samyuktam jala-pagina-samyutam | akpiny-âgami-sakitam siddha-addhya-samanvitam | asta bhogam idam sarvamanyam a-candra-tárakam ....dattavan muda
10. Nagasandra grant (XII, p. 63 ff.), dated apparently on 18th November 1381, recording the gift of a village to Vidyabhūgana-diksita by Cannappa Odeya, nephew of
