लवण समुद्र में हानि-वृद्धि का कारण
गौतम स्वामी ने पूछा- भंते ! चतुर्दशी, अष्टमी, अमावस्या तथा पूर्णमासी की तिथियों में लवण समुद्र का जल घटता-बढ़ता क्यों है ?

उत्तर में भगवान ने कहा- गौतम ! लवण समुद्र में चारों दिशाओं में चार महापाताल कलश हैं। जिनके नाम है- (१) वलय मुख (पूर्व), (२) ईश्वर (उत्तर), (३) यूपक (पश्चिम) और (४) केतुक (दक्षिण) । 5 ये सभी १ लाख योजन गहरे (ऊँचे ) हैं। जिनके एक भाग में नीचे वायु, मध्य भाग में जल एवं वायु तथा 5 ऊपरी भाग में जल भरा रहता है। इनके अतिरिक्त ७८८४ छोटे-छोटे पाताल कलश भी चारों दिशाओं में हैं । उक्त चारों तिथियों में नीचे की वायु में जब विक्षोभ पैदा होता है, तब वह जल ऊपर उछलता है। इसी कारण जल में वृद्धि होती है। जब वायु निकलता है, तब हानि होती है । कभी-कभी लवण समुद्र में किन्हीं कारणों से विशेष विक्षोभ उत्पन्न होता है तो उसके जल की लहरें (शिखा) सोलह हजार योजन ऊँचाई तक भी चली जाती हैं। परन्तु कभी अपनी सीमा से बाहर निकलकर जम्बूद्वीप को डुबोती नहीं है, क्योंकि यहाँ 5 अरिहंत, भावितात्मा श्रमण आदि महापुरुषों का विचरण होता है। उनके प्रभाव से समुद्र का जल अपनी सीमा का उल्लंघन नहीं कर पाता । चित्र में चार महापाताल कलश तथा शेष लघु पाताल कलश दिखाये हैं ।

CAUSE OF EBB AND TIDE IN LAVAN SAMUDRA Gautam Swami asked-'Bhante! Why Lavan Samudra rises and falls on fourteenth, eighth, amavasya and purnamasi days of a fortnight?
Bhagavan replied-Gautam ! There are four Mahapatal Kalash in Lavan Samudra in all the four directions. There names are
f ( 1 ) Valayamukh (east ), ( 2 ) Ishvar (north ), ( 3 ) Yupak (west) and (4) Ketuk 5
f (south). Each of these is one hundred thousand Yojans deep (high). The flower most portion of these contains air, the middle portion contains air and water and the upper portion contains only water. Besides these there are 7884 smaller Kalash too in all directions.
Air disturbance in the lower most portions of these causes rise of water during the said dates. When the air moves out there is a fall. Sometimes for some reason when there is great disturbance in Lavan Samudra the height of its waves reaches up to sixteen thousand Yojans. However, these upheavals do not inundate Jambu continent. This is because here great souls like Arihants and sagacious ascetics move about. Due to their influence the water of the sea does not cross its limit.
