(a) Satish K. Gupta, op.cit., p. 502– “Magnetic Field and Magnetic Field lines Magnetic field. The space around a magnet (or a conductor carrying current), in which its magnetic effect can be experienced, is called the magnetic field. The magnetic field in a region is said to be uniform, if the magnitude of its strength and direction is same at all the points in that region. A uniform magnetic field is represented by equidistant parallel arrows, The magnetic field of a bar magnet can be plotted by using a small compass needle. It is found that the magnetic field produced by a bar magnet and a current carrying straight solenoid are identical. Fig. shows the magnetic field produced by a bar magnet. It follows that magnetic field produced by a current carrying straight solenoid is identical to that produced by a bar magnet. The magnetic field lines do not exist in reality. This hypothetical concept has been developed in order to visualize the strength of magnetic field in different regions and the effect of magnetic field. The regions, where the magnetic field lines are close enough (crowded), the magnetic field is considered as quite strong there. 239 Jain Educationa International For Personal and Private Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
