________________ 24 absent-mindedly, the night dawned". The usage is quite living in Gujarati. (b) Genitive for the accusative. Besides the numerous examples of and governing genitive of the person to-be-communicated-to, the following cases of the genitive of the object are to be noted : तुह हिययट्ठियह छड्डवि 75b (i. e. त्वाम् हृदयस्थितम् मुक्त्वा) तुह सुवरंत 86a, तसु अणुअंचि 130a, इवं करुण भणंतह इक्किक्कह ण कुइ धीरवइ 166cd, विलवंतियह आसासिहसि 191e, मज्झ संतोसिहइ 197a, महु मिल्हिहइ 197b. Adverbially genitive is used instead of accusative twice : तहँ 104c. (c) Genitive with the word of comparison: Ref 108a and जमजीहह णं (i. e. यमजी इव) 132a. As instr. postpositions, सम्माणिय and R (§73.1) should govern instr. But originally being words of comparison, they take the gen. also. So besides fufe aftes 187d, we have सरिसु जाईहलह 188a and तुह सम्माणिय 78b. Guj. regularly uses genitive with the particle of comparison. Locative. Locative Absolute. Only two cases are met with : अणकियइ णियइ पउयणि 102d and परं पोरिसनिलएण ( i. e. पहं पोरिसनिलइ ) 77a. The latter of these two cases also supplies an example of instrumental being used for locative. णियभवणि पत्त 130d and तरुसिहरिहिं चडिउ 144a, चुयह सिहरि चडि 144d illustrate the locative of goal. Several times singular is used for plural: ...fs3 144a, कयंबिण 146c, अंगंगि 146d, दसह दिसि 148a, तिहिं भमिरिई 174b, सूरससिबिंबे 2a, लक्खणछंदाहरणे 6b. Ellipsis. The author seems to be remarkably fond of ellipsis. At several places the sense of the sentence remains incomplete and at times even the immediate context is in no way helpful in suggesting the words kept understood.
