All the Mss. read fola for fe (of course, suggested by the editor); the commentator's परिस्तनैः may hint that the original reading was perhaps foretre, faf to be taken as a aft word of Dravidian origin, meaning 'big'. 122) Hemacandra also spells it तण्णाय, दे० ना. V. 23; the com. however तण्हाय-तत्स्नात. दुब्बोजमो दुर्वायः. 123) Hemacandra equates विच्च with वर्मन्, है. •VIII. iv. 421; but elsewhere in the grammar, ibidem 350, it is used in a quotation in the sense of inter space' or 'gap between two entities' ; on the etymology of this word, see ST-3 fetsreca- , Binuhay 1946, pp. 74-80. Construe हृदयेप्सिते (पुरुष) समापतिते. 124) These descriptions, it appears to me, are less factual and more poetical. In the com. rather प्रदेशः कथमपि. 125) वाहिप्प = व्याहर, है. VIII. iv. 253; compare Marathi वाहणे. Explaining the कला called म्लेच्छितविकल्पा. the जयमङ्गला com. on the कामसूत्र gives a couple of quotations ( Benares ed. 1929, pp. 34-35 ) which may be compared with those given in our commentary : तथथा कौटिलीयम् । दादेः क्षान्तस्य कादेश्च स्वरयोरुभयोरपि। बिन्दूष्मणोर्विपर्यासाद् दुर्बोधमिति संज्ञितम् ।। अको खगो घडी चैव चटौ अणौ तपौ नमौ । यशो रषौ लसौ चेति मूलदेवीयमुच्यते ॥. See also जैनचित्रकल्पद्रुम, Ahmedabad 1935, pp. 6-7, especially the follwing quotation: आदयः कादयो ज्ञेयाः खगौ घङी परस्परम् । शेषवर्गेषु वर्गेषु मुलदेवेन भाषितम् ॥ स्वरः स एव कथ्यते । इति at fofa: 1. Dr. Raghavan calls this 'code dialect within one's group.' 127) Rather मडक्त्वा or मक्त्वा for मज्जित्वा in the com. from the root मज्जू or मस्ज 6 P. समाण = समाप,है. VIII. iv.142. 129) The meaning of this verse requires the reading भुत्तो, which is found in B. The gloss भोक्तुं should really belong to the first word of the next gatha with which भुत्तो got contaminated. 130) अंतो-अत्थाण-हर-अन्तरास्थानगृहम्, private chamber. 131) सहिएहि = सर्भिकैः. P explains एक्कसरियाए with the gloss एकदा; see also 178 below; according to Hemacandra, एक्कसरिअंझगित्यर्थे संप्रत्यर्थे च प्रयोक्तव्यम् । है. VIII. ii. 2133; at 178 Hemacandra's meaning suits well; compare Marathi एकसरे. Perhaps it goes back to एक+अवसर. The weakness of the form of this verse as given in B is that the com. has to supply a predicate for the first line :जात इति शेषः ।. परिहारो = पडिहारो. 132) कर + ओवग्गिय, for the use of ओवग्गिय see gāthās 527,729 and 887; Hemacandra's spelling is slightly different,ओअग्ग%3D व्याप, है. VIII. iv. 111. कर +ओत्थय, covered or shaded by the right hand; the doorkeeper, being quite old, is aiding his eye-sight by shading his eyes or the face with the right palm. 134) Are we to read अतर्कितमेव in the com.? 135) In the commentary एतावदवस्थान्तरम् ? 136) Render the text thus : 'वस्तु-विस्तार-विस्तृत-मतिरपि. 136*1) (P) This gāthā only explains what is suggested in the earlier one, and can certainly constitute a part of the narration. The context does not suffer even if it is omitted. Hemacandra has noted both कह and कहं for कथम्, है. VIII. i.29.137) Metre is spoiled by कुमारिलेण, 138) Referring to Aufrecht's Catalogue, we find that he mentions, in connection with चक्रपाणिजयकाव्य, the anthology सुभाषितावलि froin which the following two verses may by quoted: 24-विष्णुर्वा त्रिपुरान्तको भवतु वा ब्रह्मा सुरेन्दोथवा भानुर्वा शशिलक्षणोथ भगवान्बुद्धोथ सिद्धोथवा। रागद्वेषविषार्तिमोहरहितःसत्त्वानुकम्पोद्यतो यः सर्वैः सह संस्कतो गुणगणस्तस्मै नमः सर्वदा ॥; 25-श्लोकोयं म्वामिदत्तस्य तत्स्मृत्यै काव्यलक्षितः । योकरोत्कविनामाई चक्रपाणिजयाभिधम् ॥. Here the name is चक्रपाणिजय; our com. is quoting a verse from a quotiasty; whether they are identical or different cannot be said at present.
