Dear Sir, That knowledge is power is a trite saying. All civilized peoples have raised knowledge to the height of adoration. Minerva of the Greeks is the lovely analogue of our own well-beloved Sarasvati. For the Jainas Sarasvati is the sweet warder of the immortal love that emanates as the wordless speech of the Jinas, the conquerors of flesh and Karmas. Learning precedes conduct among the Jainas, as right preception precedes and is indeed a sine qua non of right learning therefore from the general as well as the special point of view the claims of knowledge come first. Our people today are obscure and with out the political and social influence which was wielded by their forebearers. This going down is due to our loss of knowledge as much as to our lack of organisation and the sterling quality of sincerity without wbich neither nations nor individuals ever gained any eminence. It is a sad fact that of all Indian Literatures the Jaina Literature is the last of least studied. And the Jainas are well paying the penalty of their books coming last under the appreciative and in a way sympathetic, though critical, eye of Europeon and other scholars. The curious result is this. The Jaina religion is misunderstood and misrepresented, Jaina History is scoffed at as imaginary fables, whereas even the myths of other peoples seem to embody a core of historical facts of great antiquity. An indirect consequence is that the Jainas are put down as extra gullibles subject to unlearned superstitions and medieval priestcraft. Modern oriental research, however, is settling matters straight a little. Books hitherto considered to be the words of non-Jainas are coming to be recognised as the work of Jaina authors. The truth of Jaina traditions is being established surely, though slowly. Jaina books are widely read and studied more. There is even an everwidening circle of men and women in the East and West, to

________________ The Sacred Books of tho Jainas. whom truth is revealed in Jaina books and who find .consolation and inspiration in the principles and teachings of our an. cient Jaina preachers. This is the psychological hour; this is the dawn of a new morning for Jainism; this is the rennaisance Jiteral and figurative-of our ancient and glorious creed. Our rich and orthodox brethren pride themselves on their piety-to a certain extent, rightly but not entirely so. Their money is not always well spent. The motive may be of the best; but the actual manifestation, takes a very limp and loose form. In their charitable designs we miss a sense of proportion. The needs of the community are but ill-judged and things that may well wait for decades gain an unfair and fratricidal precedence over others which must be looked to immediately, It is like a starving 'man investing his last anna on a richly embroidered shawl. The Jaina creed is clothed in costly page. ants, whereas the soul of it is starved for want of substantial aliment. Thus it cories about that our great mother Sarasvati has been woefully neglected. To wipe out this shame the All India Jaina Association have undertaken the publication of the hitherto unpublished works in English which should form a complete Library of Jaina Scriptures under the little of "The Sacred Books of the Jainas. All the canonical scriptures of the different sects of the Jainas will be included in the series and each volume will contain the original Text with an English Translation, Transliteration, Introduction, critical and explanatory nots on different passages with numerous appendices which will contain detailed descriptions and discourses on the points briefly touched in th text etc. etc. Editors and authors are to be men of worldfame as scholars of Jainism and whose names are landmarks in the fields of oriental Research. The utility of such a series can never be oyer-estimated. To the Jainas, these volumes will reveal the truths of their religion, the history of the life and teachings of their great Tirthankaras, the account of rituals and ceremonies, the philosophical doctrines of Jai ism and a detailed desoription of the progress of Jaina religion and literature. VA the philologist, the original text of Jaina Sacred Books will be of the deepest interest, for in them he will find the various forms of prakrit, so little studied even in these days. To the workers in the province of ancient history, a list of the great kings and sages who contributed to the spread of Jaina religion and a detailed account of the races and creeds and of social and political laws will surely be of undying interest. The science of Numismatics will have a valuable help in ascertaining the history of kings and dynasties who promulgated the strange and valuable coins and medals of yore. There will be a verification of the records of past incidents depicted in the architectural remains or detailed in the ancient inscriptions scattered through. out the length and breadth of India. To the student of comparative religion the full account of an ancient religion and its tenets will be a priceless possession and lastly to all, the immense mass of learning accumulated in these volumes will throw a flood of light upon the unfamiliar by-ways and high-ways of the ancient history of India. Much money is needed, much co-operation is required for such a vast and important task. Is there any Jaina, man or woman whose whole soul is not thrilled with a sense of duty to make this great undertaking a great success ? What else can demonstrate and secure the immortality of Jsina teachings more effectively than the publishing broad-cast of the learning of Eternity of which our Tirthankaras left the Jainas as mere trustees and oustodians. Let us discharge our duty. Let us help the sacred cause by sending money, Manuscripts, suggestions and other offers of help and co-opecation to the undersigned Kumar Devendra Prasad Jaina. The idea of turning out publications of the Sacred Jaina Books into English with introduction, translation, commentaries, explanatory notes, charts of various descriptions and appendices and thereby of promulgating the truth of Jain philosophy as much as it deserves in the world, does not only affect the in. terests and knowledge of the students of Jainism, but the very existence of Jainism and Jainas. Without it we would in a short time be considered as nonentities. We are coming to the verge of our very existence. Now let us be more active and work up the movement without delay. Now or Never. Time is rosy. We have before our eyes all the materials to help up to bring out this golden series of Jaina works which would be quite indespensable to Stadents of Jainism. Kumar Devendraprasad we are glad to note had been collecting materials for writing a history of Jainism for the last seven years and is ready to supply plenty of them to our graduates if they are kind enough to take up the study of Jaina History. Now the time is come when all these materials should be pieced together under the following heads and a complete upto-date illustrated history of our dear Jainism be published.
