________________ तिलकम जरी *Katha-sära'. 5 It consists of 1206 verses divided into nine cantos, 6 the end of which is aptly called 'Višrāma.' This is the oldest available attempt at summarizing the prose-romance of Dhanapāla. The author of this work has tastefully preserved in a finely summarized form, in Anuştubh verses, all of the poetic features and fragrance of the original, including that of some notable descriptions, phrases and verses, 7 though he has incorporated as quotations into his work two verses of the original in Aryā metre and one in śikharini metre. 8 Though it is meant to be a mere summary 9 of the TM, it has rather resulted into a fine small epic poem possessing some of its epic characteristios, such as the division into cantos, their apt nomenclature, change of metre at the end of each canto and so on. And the poet seems to know it too.10 'Over and above the running metre Anustubh aver which he has considerable, though not complete, command, he has also pressed into service the following metres, viz., Mandākrāntā (I, 106), Sārdülavikriditam (I, 122; V, 168), Malini (III, 139; VIII, 141), Sragdharā (IV, 129), Sikharini (VII, 162), Harini:(V, 167), Prthvi (VI, 140), Mālati (VII, 161, and Manjubhāşini (IX, 90). Essentially based on the TM, but free from the limitations inherent in summarizing such a prose work into a totally different mode of verse, this compendium has been rightly judged as the best 5. ibid., I. 6 : TSga etc, the Colophone of the ninth Canto : sa fastartar 15uA AA AIÀ 21: 1; ibid, Epilogue, vs. 6 quoted above.
