________________ 14. He who is the knower of his own faith and that of the others, who is profound, resplendent, benevolent, tranquil and who has been endowed with hundreds of virtues, is capable of delivering the essence of the doctrine (preached by the Arahantas). 15. Whatever you desire from yourself fitdr yourself) and whatever you do not desire from yourself (for yourself), desire that for others and (do not desire that for others). This much is the law of Jina. 16. The (śramana) Samgha (order of saints) is the assurance, the consolation (and) the refuge of all beings. (It) is (providing mental calmness) like an air-conditioned house ard is (affectionate) like parents. Do not, there fore, be frightened. 17. For him who keeps no devotion for the Guru (spiritual teacher), has no reverence for him, takes no pride in him, experiences no awe of him, feels no modesty in his presence, and who maintains no affection for him, what is the sense of his remaining with the Guru ? 18. Sensuous pleasures are undoubtedly the mine of misfort unes. (They) are pleasureful for a moment, (and) painful for a long time; (they) are much painful (and) very little pleasureful; (they) are opposed to the pleasures of the world and happiness of liberation. 19. Just as in the plantain tree there is no where any substance (stem to be seen) in spite of its being searched well, so also there is no (experience of) happiness in sensuous objects even if it has been investigated thoroughly. 74 ] [ Samaņasuttam Jain Education International For Personal & Private Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
