________________ Introduction 23. Bhutabali and Guņadhara to whom we owe the Siddhānta Granthas as well as the Sanskrit writers Samantabhadra, Pujyapāda, Akalanka, Mānatunga and others.) Haribhadra, the eighth century writer, of whom we have already occasion to refer, was the earliest Sanskrit commentator of the canon, and his contributions to Jain logic are outstanding. In his Şad-darśanasamuccaya he has given a brilliant exposition of the different systems of philosophy of the day. His Samarāicca-kahā is also an important contribution to Jain doctrines.? Of the other writers belonging to the eighth century, besides tbose mentioned above, mention may be made of Bappabhatti, Sobhana, Dhanapāla and Devabhadra. Sobhana's Tīrthes'astuti or Caturvimśajinastuti and Dhanapāla's Päiyalacchi are indeed significant works. Akalanka, whose date has been a matter of controversy, was a great logician whose famous works are Rājavārtika and Aştašati. Jain logic was further enriched by Vidyānanda, Māņikyanandi and Prabhācandra. The Rāştrakūta king Amoghavarşa was a devout Jain who composed a Praśnottaramālikā (catechism) on Jain ethics. Of the Jain works of the ninth and tenth centuries reference must be made to the famous commentaries Dhavalā and Jayadhavalā, composed by Vīrasena and Jinasena, the Tattvārthaśāra and Puruşārthasiddhyupāya of Amstacandra, the celebrated commentator on Kundakunda's works, and the philosophical compendiums of Nemicandra. From the eighth century onwards, the Jain writers adopted Apabhramsa as their language of religious expression. The first Jain writer to use Apabhramśa in dohā metre (couplets of varying measure) was Joindu of the sixth century whose Paramappapayāsu and Jogasāru deserve special mention in this connection. The Pāhuda-Dohā of Rāmasimha Muni, Sāvayadhamma-Dohā of Devasena and Vairāgya Most of these works were published in MCDG and DLJP series.
