with the art of dancing, singing, gesticulation, dramatic representation, construction and arrangement of theatres etc. For outline of the different chapters of the Națyaśastra see Winternitz GIL, iii, pp. 7f and Kane HAL pp. vi-vii. See also S. K. De- Sanskrit Poetics Vol. I pp. 23-44 where he discusses the date of Nāțyaśāstra and the qustion how far the extant version of the work represents the original text. ॥ॐनमो श्रीगणेशाय ॥ प्रणम्य शिरसा देवौ पितामहमहेश्वरौ । नाट्यशास्त्रं प्रवक्ष्यामि ब्रह्मणा पदुदाहृतं ॥१॥ समाप्तजयं व्रतिनं स्वसुतैः परिवारितं । अनध्याये कदाचित्तं भरतं नाट्यकोविदं ॥२॥ मुनयः पर्युपास्यन मात्रेयः प्रमुखा पुरा । पप्रच्छुस्ते महात्मानो नियतेंद्रियबुद्धयः ॥ ३॥ थो यं भगवता सम्यक् कथितो वेदसंमितः। नाट्यवेदः कथं चायमुत्पन्नः कस्य वा कृते ॥ ४॥ कत्यंगः किं प्रमाणश्व प्रयोगश्चास्य कीदृशः। सर्वमेतद्यथातत्वं भगवन्वक्तुमर्हसि ॥५॥ तेषां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा मुनीनां भरतो मुनिः। प्रत्युवाच ततो वाक्यं नाट्यवेदकथां प्रति ॥६॥ भवद्भिः शुचिभिर्भूत्वा तथावहितमानसैः। श्रूयतां नाट्यवेदस्य संक्षेपो ब्रह्मानीर्मतः ॥७॥ पूर्व कृतयुगे विप्रा वृत्ते स्वायंभुवेंतरे । त्रेतायुगे संप्रवृत्ते मनोवैवस्वतस्य च ॥८॥ ग्राम्यधर्म प्रवृत्ते तु कामलोभवशं गते। इर्ष्या क्रोधादि संसूढे लोके सुखितदुःखिते ॥९॥ देवदानवगंधर्वै रक्षोयक्षमहोरगैः ।
