________________ परिशिष्ट 279 आचाराङ्ग प्रथम श्रुत-सकन्ध : प्रथम अध्ययन confera Efe À ya Hifa) Ācārārga, Chapter I I have carefully perused your data (a fascicule of the first uddesaga of Sattha-Parinnā-Ācārāņga) given in the notes and the constituent-text. You have taken tremendous trouble in porting over every letter of the text. I hope your effort will inspire other scholars to come together for forming an institute for preparing a Critical Edititon of the Amg. Canon. Sangli, 15-5-93. -Prof. G. V. Tagare The restoration of the original Ardhamāgadhi of the Acárānga 1.1 attempted by Prof. K. R. Chandra is a memorable effort in the direction of the reconstruction of that language and should be extended to the entire portion of the book I as well as to other ancient āgamas of the Ardhamāgadhi canon. What we now expect from him is to cnunciate the concrete rules for the formulation of the Ardhamāgadhi language and work out its standard grammatical system. That will grcatly help others also to carry out further work on the phase II āgamas. Dr, Chandra deserves the compliments of the philologists, linguists, and the students of early Nirgrantha religion. The next problem to tackle with is the origin of the Ardhamāgadhi language recently claimed from the Sauraseni used in the Yāpaniya and lately in the Digambara surrogate agama works.
