आचाराङ्ग Sauraseniana Mahārāștri. Dr. Chandra has stratified a number ofverbal and nominal suffixes too, on the basis of their usages. On the strength of the above he argues that in editing the Ardhamāgadhi texts, at least the older ones, the older forms, wherever found (as textual readings or variants) should be preferred. With this point in view, he has also given a sample ofediting in the seventh chapter of his book and has laid down the principles to be followed in this regard in the eighth and final chapter of his book.
All along the author has been meticulous and painstaking. He deserves careful attention of all scholars working in the field of editing texts in the Ardhamāgadhi or any other old Prakrit.
The language is simple, lucid and pleasant. But phrases like Sudharmāsvāmi pharmāte haim (page 94) and 'bhāṣākiya svarūpa' (page 106) may jar on a puritanical reader. Printing is good and correct except a few lapses of proof-correction such as 'punarāvalokana' for 'punaravalokana'(onpage 90)andwrong folio heading onpages81 and 83.

संस्कृत और प्राकृत के पाणिनिकल्प अपने कालोत्तर महावैयाकरण आचार्य हेमचन्द्र ने व्याकरण ग्रंथ 'सिद्धहेमशब्दानुशासनम्' के प्रारंभ (अध्याय ८, पाद १, सूत्र ३) में ही लिखा है कि 'आर्षे हि सर्वे विधयो विकल्प्यन्ते' अर्थात् ऋषि-प्रोक्त होने के कारण प्राकृत भाषा में सभी विधियों का विकल्पन यानी प्रयोग-वैविध्य के स्वातन्त्र्य का अवकाश रहता है। इसीलिए अर्धमागधी प्राकृत ही क्यों, महाराष्ट्री
और शौरसेनी प्राकृतों में भी प्रयोगों की विविधता और विचित्रता सहज ही परिलक्षित होती है।
संस्कृत भाषा के समानान्तर प्रवाहित होती हुई प्राकृत भाषा चूंकि लोकजीवन के बीच से गुजरने वाली भाषा रही है, इसीलिए इसमें विभिन्न प्रदेशों की लोकभाषाओं की प्रवृत्तियों और प्रकृतियों का समावेश होने से प्रयोग बाहुल्य अस्वाभाविक नहीं है। विशेषतः प्राचीन काल के शिलालेख, जिनमें अशोक के लेख अतिशय महाघ हैं, प्राय: जन-जीवन में सम्यग् ज्ञान और सम्यक्
