or within a quarter of a decade after his death. Muni Shri Punyavijayi kindly took the trouble of searching out the pieces of this Ms. from a steel trunk containing broken pieces of some other Mss. and he gave all such pieces of the J Ms. to me, which I have preserved with me to this day. Out of those pieces, I have identified about thirty-four such fragments, and given then serial numbers 1 to 68 for each of their sides. Then I copied down the text as was written on them, and marked the corresponding page and line numbers of the portions of the lines surviving therein. This data I have utilised for recording the few variant readings which I could gather for the Critical Variants and Critical Readings in the Critical Text. The details of size and number of folios is not possible to obtain. The script of the Ms. is old Jain Devanāgari with 'paļi-mātrā' style, and the writing testifies to the Śa-śrti and Sa-śrti as also the confounding of 'Pa' and 'Ya' in many places. Further it seems to preserve many of the readings as they originally were before the text was revised by śāntisūri, perhaps in the light of Jain tenets. For instance the reading gezfagfa: cafe a of the Ms., for ggfHTETTI na FETHUS of the P. Ms. and subsequeut Mss. of its tradition (p. 3 1.28 of the Crt. Edn.) is unique and significant. Similar is the case with the reading fakufaal of the J Ms. for “ gaufart of the P Ms., etc., (p. 145, 1.3 of the Crt. Edn) where mere change of fato a' has changed the meaning from Vedic texts.' to 'Jain Agama texts' :

Punyavijayaji's Ms. (the P Ms.): Another one which now rightfully deserves to be called the oldest available, complete and utilizable ms., and chronologically the next to the oldest one, was also the one formerly in possession of Muni Shri Punyavijayaji at the Luņsāwādā UPāśraya Bhandara at Ahmedabad.
