________________ V. Commentaries on the TM In all four commentaries are known so far to have been composed on the TM, two of them being noted by Shri M.D. dcsail, Professor H. D. Velankar 2 and others; they are (i) a Tippanaka by śāntisūri, and (ii) a Vịtti by Pannyāsa Padmasāgara. The third one is by our senior contemporary Shri Vijayalāvanyasūri. The fourth one by some anonymous author has not yet been noted by any research scholar in any of the catalogues of mss. anywhere, since it is in the form of marginal notes on the mss. of the TM. But it deserves to be noted and published as it sometimes far surpasses the Tippanaka of Santisuri in many points noticed below. It is here in this thesis of mine that it is now being brought to the notice of Sanskrit scholars. A detailed account of all these four commentaries on the TM is given below in their chronological order. (1) Tilakamañjari - tippanaka :- The author of this commentary-rather notes-in Sanskritwas Shri śāntisūri (also called śāntyācārya) of the Pūrņatalla Gaccha, who flourished during the twelfth century A.D., and is known to have been a disciple of Shri Vardhamanasūri.3 Evedently the commentary was composed at a time not very distant from that of the author of the TM. He was different from his namesake who is reported to have revised the TM in view of the Jain tenets, at the express request of Dhanapāla himself. The author of this Tippanaka' is known to have commented upon the following works also : (i) Jaina-tarka-vārttika; (ii) Vrndāvana-kavya; (iii) Meghābhyudaya-kāvya; (iv) Śiva-bhadra-kavya; and, according to Shri M. D. Desai, on the (v) Ghatakharpara - kavya also. 6 This commentary is probably the earliest cxtant explantory work on the TM. Consisting as it does of one thousand fifty (1050) gramthas in extent, 7 it is too 1. JSSI (D), p. 230. 2. JRK, p. 159. 3. JSSI(D); pp. 586 - 587; TM(P), Pt. I, Intro., p. 29. 4. PRC. XVII, 202. 5.
