The Doctrine of Jainism Alledgedly Introduced by Aryadova (fe Here we find the theory of anēkantavada or syadvada.
I have just introduced the two passages which I hope that com. petent scholars would elucidate dubious points.
The fourth heresy mentioned in the game work also seems to be somewhat relevent to the doctrine of Jainism.
“To assert that all things are not both (not of both characters ) is the theory held by the teachers of Jňatiputra.".....
Question : How do the teachers of Jřatiputra assert that all things are not both ?
Answer: To assert that all things are not both is as follows: All things cannot be described as one, nor different; for, otherwise one would be involved into both the extremes (anta ). As all the teachers who assert that all things are one, or different, or both, are beset with defects, intelligent men do not entertain any of the abovementioned three theories.
Question: What are the defects !
Angwer: If there is no darkness separate from light, then darkness would disappear, when light disappears. (On the other hand ), if there is darkness separate from light, then there must be darkness which is not light, and there must be light which is not darkness, Therefore, we do not set forth any of the assertions that all things are one, or different, or both, However, we do not mean that guch notions as "one", "different", or "both " do not exist at all. (Taisho-Tripitaka, vol. 32, p. 155. )
I am not quite sure what is meant by this passage. It is likely that this passage refers to the theory of a branch of Jainism or Ajivikas.
