lead a religious life or to renounce the world. 124A This policy, though not followed consistently, has led, we fear, to the extinction of a good many popular poems that, otherwise, would have preserved in the Jain Bhandars. So all that we have now are a few nice rasos like the Bharata Bahubali Ghor, Gajasukumara Ras, Neminath Ras, and Bharatēśvara Bahubali Ras; and agafest a fairly large number of short pieces commemorating either the initiation or death of Jain Gurus, 134B
Metrics:
On metrics Rajasthanis studied a number of good books. Specially popular was the , a book in eight chapters which is known to have been studied and taught by Jinavallabha,1 125 and is mentioned also by Jinapala in the Kharataragachcha-Pattavali.126 Jaisalmer has a Ms., not only of the original texts, but also of commentary on it by Harsata, son of Bhatta Mukula 127 Kaisikha, a work in Prakrit dealing with 8 and is, of which there is a palm-leaf Ms., dated in V. 1190, is probably equally old. Jaisalmer has its text and a commentary on it by Gopala, son of Bhaṭṭa Chakrapāla, 128 Two years later is the manuscript of Jayakirti's gate which he said to have written after consulting the works of Mandavya, Pingala, Janasraya, Satava, Pujyapada, and Jayadeva.129 Chhandonusasana of Hemchandra may be presumed to have become known along with his other works in the second half of the 12th century A. D.
Alankarasastra (Poetics):
Specially popular with the Jain literati was the study of ragnaA. The गणधर सार्धशतक बृहद्वृलि speaks of Jinavallabha's study of the अलङ्कारशास्त्रs of
