________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir (ii) Manu Smrti, which is a work of the earliest period, referred to above. There are only two manuscripts (Dh/125, Dh{126) containing the commentary on Yajnavalkya Smrti written by the famous Vijnane vara. Most of the manuscripts in our collection contain works compiled during a period ranging from C 1100-1750 A. D. GATANANDA ACHARYA.. . It is not defutely known when complete cores of Smrti works began to be written in Orissa, The large number of copperplate charters and stone inscriptions, so far discovered in Orissa are silent about this matter. By research work carried during the last seven years on this subject, it is now known that Satananda Acharya was the earliest Smrti writer of Crissa. But he was more renowreil for li's notable work on Astronomy callel Bhasvati or paragrat praat which was finished in Yngabula 4200 or Saka year 1021, which is equivalent to 1099 A. D. as recorded in the first and last verses of this work. He was a native of Purushottama or Puri anl was the son of Samkara and Sarasvati, his family surname being Acharya, He based his astronomical calculations from the meridian of his slative town Pur: (11) But Satanan la was also reputed as the author of two other works namely 'Satananca Ratnamala' ani "Satananda Samgraha'. Of these two the latter was definitely a work on Smrti, as it is profusely qnotel by the later Smrti writers of Orissa, Satana la Samgraha which is definitely one of the earliest Smrti works of Orissa, is n'w practically lost as no information about the discovery of its manuscript is found in reports on the search of manuscripts so far ava:lable to lis. But by quotations made from this work in almost all the later Smrti works of Orissa, it is proved to have buen accepted as an anthority for about seven centuries after its compilation. So a rough idea abont the nature an! contents of this valuable work is given below, which is based on the study of quotations made from this. From our knowledge so far gainel, this work can be put into the category of a digest on Kala' (FTC) treating of the principles of Jyotisha as applielt. Smrti. The contents of this known by research are as follows: (4). Vide my article Catananda', a famous Astronomer and Smrti writer of Oriaga 0. H. R. J.
