________________ १७२ : the spring. The comradeship of Vasant and Manmatha is rightly noted by Rajasekhara that Vasanta, as he is very delicate, first makes the minds of lovers very delicate and then Manmatha pierces his sharp arrows. Thus the atrocity of Cupid is faciliated by Vasanta. Some of these verses introduce the pining plaints and the passionate out bursts of the heroines before their mother-in-law, marternal aunt (māmī), friends and others. A reader can find the heart and soul of the heroine enwrapped in it. It seems that these verses of viraha in Vasanta especially in the Sattasaï might have given rise to the conception of love-letter in latter dramas. In this we can see that all these points, the description of Nature, the festival and viraha in the spring, have furnished exuberant imaginations, and much matters to the plot construction of the latter dramas in Sanskrit and Prakrit. With their felicitous style these literary pieces of vernal beauty appeal to the hearts of readers as if with their serene smile.
