________________ 883 śramana/April-June/1999 Jayavallabha observes that at the behest of Vasanta the parru with a tiny bunch of mango in its beak addresses the king Autumn thus - "Oh King! get back; now the entire earth is acquired by the King Vasanta". Further he fancies that the mango bunch has made the swarm of bees averse to other flowers. These bunches torcher the love-lorn lovers by enflanting the fire of love though they are wet and tender in nature. A modern poet describes the emotive relation of mango and cuckoo in a different way. The male cuckoo on the branch of a mango gave its new sprouts to his beloved and as such the enhanced delight exhorted the she-cuckoo to give out delectable sweet note in Vasanta. 12 Another poet observes that the cooing of the cuckoo and the hums of tipsy bees that are gratifying to ears are as if receiving fondly the King Vasanta on behalf of the garden embossomed th the vernal grandure. Rājasekhara deliciously imagines that the waving notes of the cuckoos are giving some healthy pieces of advice. 13 The bees hovering over mango bunches, appear embarrasingly as if smoke sheets of fire in the form of Viraha for enervated travellers. Hāla finds these bees as the black jewels fixed in the girdle of the vernal beauty.14 Another refulgent piece of charm that embellishes the Nature in spring is the Asoka tree. The enchanting sprouts and bunches, since they are influenced by the spring, are treated to be one of the endearing arrows of Cupid. It is interesting to note that this. Asoka is in the habit of springing fair flowers only if it is kicked lovely by a beautiful lady with her foot nicely decorated. In a way the beauty of that lady is wisely put to test.15 Asoka, as if to take revenge against this so called drastic kick exasperates the women in separation in the same spring. Hāla humourously remarks that no self respected man ever tolerates such insult, and as such when women kick this Asoka, to retaliate this, Asoka with its new blossoms torments a great deal Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
