________________ INTRODUCTION iphered with difficulty." The next chapter called Sabdanityatavāda was printed in fragments only. Almost half of the text was missing. And Dhundhiraj noted on p. 6240: Atah param mūlam asmin prakarane nopalabdham “The text after this portion is not available." Due to a printer's devil, however, this footnote was not given in its proper place, i, e., on p. 625, but on p. 624. Almost a folio from the beginning of the lśvaravada chapter was missing. But unfortunately, Pandit Dhundhiraj did not add any footnote to explain the abrupt beginning. Scholars, for some time, must have puzzled over the opening sentence of this chapter. To complicate the matter further the printed text stops with an unfinished sentence after p. 652. The concluding protion of this chapter was apparently not avilable to the editor. But Pandit Dhundhiraj did not make any comment here. Curiously enough, on p. 646, when the commentary NSD-prabhà ended abruptly with an incomplete sentence, Pandit Dhundhiraj remarked as follows: Ataḥ param çıkaitat prakarane no palabhyate iti samāpto 'yam yathaprāpto grantho veditavyah. "After this, the commentary on this section is not avilable. Thus ends the book as it has been obtained (from mss.)." It is clear from the above account that the 1924 edition was incomplete and left many things to be desired. Prof. D. C. Bhattacharya remarked of this edition as follows: "...the edition is full of lacunas and is incomplete towards the end." In fact, at present, when publication of many manu. script-catalogues in India reveal the existence of several complete manuscripts of NSD, the 1924 edition has simply the value of being used as another manuscript for the purpose of preparing a critical editon. Thus, while preparing the critical edition of NSD I have used the 1924 edition as another source-book for comparing variants. The present edition has been prepared from the following materials : M --A manuscript from L. D. Institute of Indology.
