________________ INTRODUCTION 2. Notes (Tippani) I have given notes at the end of the Dharmottara-pradipa. They give the references to similar discussions in other works of Dharmakirti, where we find the subject-matter of the Nyayabindu and its commentaries treated in brief or exhaustively. I have also given references from two unpublished Tippanas of the Nyaya-bindu-tika as well as the published Tippani to support the Dharmottara-pradipa, where Durveka has indicated the refutation of other views in Dharmottara's commentary. The Nyayamanjari and Nyaya-vartikatatparya-tika refute the views held by the Nyaya-bindu at many places; some of these have been indicated in my notes. 3. Indices Seven indices have been supplied at the end of this volume : one for the Nyaya-bindu, three for the Nyaya-bindu-tika, and three for the Dharmottara-pradipa. Index I includes all the important philosophical and other terms in the Nyaya-bindu. Only three proper names are found in the Nyaya-bindu. They are also indexed in Index I, but have been printed in black letters. Indices II, III and IV include all the important philosophical terms, the proper names and the quotations respectively in the Nyaya-bindutika. Indices V, VI and VII include all the important philosophical terms, the proper names and the quotations respectively in the Dharmottara-pradipa. It is hoped that scholars engaged in research might be benefited by these Indices. 4. Acknowledgements It is my pleasant duty to record first of all my gratefulness to Dr. A. S. Altekar, Hon. Director, K. P. Jayaswal Research Institute, who prepared a scheme to publish the MSS. brought by Pt. Rahulji from Tibet and gave me an opportunity to edit the Dharmottara-pradipa. For a long time I was thinking of preparing a critical edition of the Nyaya-bindu with the commentary of Dharmottara, and I am very much indebted to Dr. Altekar for kindly giving me an opportunity to do this by agreeing to include the Nyaya-bindu text and its commentary also in the
